On the manufacturer's directions it says to turn the snork head around in bad conditions, then I come on here and it says it will damage your engine. Sounds like no body knows what's good with these things. I'll sell the thing quicker than I can take it out of the package. Not real happy right now as I feel like I wasted $400 in that group buy.

I mean even rain causes issues? I don't want water in my air box whatsoever. Idc if you could drill a hole to drain. Water in the air box is never good, I'd rather not have it. So should I keep the thing or sell it?
I understand your frustration, let me tell you that I live an area that gets some heavy Snow, and Rain now and then, I've never had a problem. I did install this mesh cover:

This also keeps out the Birds and Bugs! I use the Volant Powercore Filter which is the best, IMO to use with the Snorkel! You can turn the Snorkel Head around in a Blizzard at low speeds, under 15mph! I think you should keep it, you'll be glad you did!;)

May I ask why did you buy one?

I bought one because I like the concept and look of it. But I bought it for the group buy price for $100 off without knowing the things like water and snow being an issue..

And thanks alot for that idea, I will keep it and that's what I'll do. How exactly do you get the mesh to stay in place?

looks like zip ties.

Won't water crossings, that you would need a snorkle for, fry the
electronics/alternator? I have been going back and forth with the buying one.

Ya, they a just small zip ties, it's kinda of a pain in the as$ to cut the mesh, I would use a glove next time, tares up the hands a little, I cut mine close to a perfect fit, then I sprayed some rattle can (flat black) done deal!

Quick water crossings in even shallow water causes alot of splashing up into the engine compartment, having the benefet of a sealed system eliminates water from entering the intake, I personally would not go much deeper than the top of the tires (about 3 to 3 1/2 ft) without sealing the electronics/alternator, ect. Also don't forget the benefet of True Cold Air the snorkel provides, your filter also takes alot less dirt from not having to suck air in from the engine compartment and filth off the road! A snorkel is not just for water forging, while off-roading in large groups (safari style) dirt and dust can clog your filter up fast, having the snorkel high above that jet stream helps cut back on the problem!

I love my snorkel, and my X gets way, I mean WAY more lookie loos now too!

Good idea on the mesh. That's what i'll be doing in the next couple days. I'll look into the snork head that flyfish has too

I did the Rain Gutter Mesh Mod yesterday!! Thanks to kschneider7 and the original thread:

I love the way it came out. This will probably help me to keep and install my Snork instead of selling it, as I was having doubts. Here it is....

Thanks again for the idea fellas!!

So how much vibration is everyone seeing from the snorkel when driving at highway speeds? Just curious.
At high speeds, and strong winds the head moves and shakes a litte, not really that bad at all, the main support on the a-arm is very sturdy!

Mine seems to shake at that L bracket and up but it's mostly at high speeds. I think those plastic inserts are part of the reason but I'm not sure yet. I'm just gonna have to keep an eye on it and possibly look into some of Chris Haynes suggestions and add some rubber washers.

Kelly, what kind of screws did you use to screw into the a-pillar?

I used the screws that were given. We didn't see the need for the plugs, and it sounds like some of the guys who did use them have been the ones with the rattling problems.

I drilled the holes small at first, then slowly cut at the metal so the square Plastic pieces would fit tight, I tried to paint the Plastic Black, but some the paint rubbed off when I applied Silicone to seal the holes! It is very sturdy, at least for now! Here's a couple pics:

From watching it this morning, most of mine is coming from the L bracket but I dont' think it's coming from the mount point on the a-pillar. It's more of the flex of the L bracket itself. I made my holes as small as possible and worked them up a little at a time too so I had a tight fit and it seems pretty sturdy to me.

got my mesh added into the snorkel head.

if you add the rubber grommet/washer, and weather stripping as chrishaynes suggested it will cut down on viabration. i used those square plastic plugs on the a-pilar and had quite abit of viabration on the highway, the stripping and rubber grommet helped reduce it.

found some good posting on the ole "facing snorkel front or back" debat on the expo forum. here are a couple links to it. some dudes actually did a pressure/vac test to see what the difference is between a snorkel head facing forward or backward. conclusion: "In conclusion, just like we can wear a baseball backwards under exceptional circumstances, we can do the same by installing our snorkel intakes backwards in special conditions, such as when driving in jungle areas, where we wish to avoid tangling with branches or hanging vines.

Under other circumstances, particularly if we are driving at high speed, we believe that we have clearly demonstrated that installing the snorkel intake backward will have a detrimental effect on the engine’s efficiency, which will manifest itself as power loss and an increase in fuel consumption."
