'06 Xterra S; ~41,000 miles

Lately I've noticed that the shift from P to D is not smooth. I drove a rental car on Friday and the shift from P to D on that car was relatively smoother.

1. Whenever I shift from P to D or D to R, I can hear an audible "clunk" sound along with a slight jolt.

2. Problem goes away when the engine is hot.

3. Transmission fluid was drained and refilled (Matic J) by the dealership in Dec '09. I was advised against flushing the tranny. The color of the ATF on the dipstick is light pink and I think the level is tad bit higher. I don't think coolant has leaked into transmisson fluid. I was planning on bypassing the radiator today but now I will wait until next weeked. I will take my X to stealership first thing tomorrow morning.

My X has served me well for last 4 years. No problems whatsoever. I hope there is nothing majorly wrong with my X.

This problem is driving me insane! Any suggestions/feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Sunny

X2, parking on a hill and not setting the E-brake prior to putting the trans in park will cause that. Always set e-brake first, then shift to park.

Welcome to the sit by the way. :hello2: Don't forget to swing by the welcome section and introduce yourself!

Thanks for responding!

The basement parking in my building is pretty flat. I tried D -->N-->E-brake--->P, but to no avail.

Front and rear brake pads were changed last month. Not sure if that lead to this problem. The brakes seem to work fine though.

Needless to say,the DIY section of this forum is awesome.

*changed my front and rear brake pads for under $150 (was quoted ~$600 by the local dealership)
*fixed poblem with my heater blower motor ( was quoted ~$460 by the local dealership)

Next week I am planning on bypassing the radiator + install B&M 70255 trasmission cooler.

My X does it too, 08 S with about 22k on her. I never go from P to D though, always into reverse first. It does it only on occasion and totally at random times. I always set my e brake too but now that i think about it i set it after im already in P. Ill try to pull it first and see how it does.

First post, woop woop!

so, i have this issue too, i figured it was nothing to worry about (still think it's nothing to worry about), but this e-brake thing has me intrigued. can anybody explain WHY engaging the e-brake prior to shifting out of drive would prevent the clunk of the driveline engaging when shifting into gear?

Just a guess but putting the e brake first puts the weight of the vehicle on the e brake and not the transmission, which in turn has less pressure/stress on it when you shift from park.
