Anyone in the Denver area have a scan tool that can do transmission stuff? I called support about the trans shifting hard between 1st and 2nd and they said it needs to have a relearn process with a obdII scan tool. i have a cheap code reader but it cant do that.

alternatively has anyone had to have this done by a shop/ dealer and know how much it costs?

Wow, just realized you've been dealing with this since 2021! Haven't had this problem before, but I hope you get it fixed! You must really love your X as I do mine!

Well, I took it to Nissan for a DIAG and Consult II trans relearn.

they said that its showing a P1759 code, front brake solenoid, apparently a different one... so they want to replace the trans for $6k.

I called streetsmart who did the valvebody work and they said that it most likely is something in side the trans, a "clocked band" that is causing the front brake solenoid codes.

they said i have 2 wks left on the warranty and to try the relearn and look into the band, but suggested they would be willing to do another R&R ( return and repair i suppose )..

but idk, that will be like the 4th time, maybe what the "experts" are telling me is correct, it needs a new trans... or a rebuild at least..

idk it sucks because it feels good everywhere except the 1-2 shift.
down shitfs are good, 2-3, 3-4 OD etc all good.

but, I cant trust it anymore to take me into the mountains and get me back home. much less something like Black bear pass which i have been wanting to do this summer...

limp mode would not be fun on the switchbacks...

also, i believe the hard shift from 1-2 has caused excessive play in the rear drive shaft and or rear diff.

sooo.. yeah im thinking about options RN... i wonder how much a vk swap would be, with a full engine AND trans?

I really dont want to buy a new vehicle due to cost, and i really dont want to buy a used vehicle thats also going to have mechanical issues.

le sigh.

not a fun topic huh...

im going to call around to some local trans shops and see how much they want to swap in a rebuilt RE5

so its just been sitting the last few weeks while i chew on what to do about it.

called around to a few shops, most have about a 3wk lead time, booked one for 8/21.

talking to the guy it sounds like they will actually do a real diagnoses to figure out whats going on, as opposed to nissan saying "pXXX = new transmission"
OR

they just come back with the same thing, hopefully a bit less than $6k. reman transmissions are around $3k, so i cant see why a skilled and equipped shop would require another $3k in labor.

Kimmer transmission and gear in parker co has my Xterra, they checked it out and said that the tcm is bad, they recommend replace valvebody and reprogram.

$2400.

better than $6k from nissan. I need to call Kimmer and ask what sort of warranty they provide, but either way i feel better about it being done by a professional. ive tried to do it myself and obviously that isnt working.

it kinda makes sense though because nissan said they cant program the unit is as and blamed it on the code. also, i had a friend who has a friend with a consult II and he came over and tried to re program the tcm and just got a bunch of errors on the screen along with p1759 but he wasn't able to say what was wrong with it, just that the scanner wasn't able to read it properly.

they said they didnt find anything wrong with the driveshaft or rear diff so thats promising.

I was wondering if this ever got resolved. I just fixed a P1757/P1764 code this morning. I added a little more to my original write up here: https://www.thenewx.org/threads/more-transmission-problems.277433/
good work. im mechanically inclined but not electronically.

FYI this is like the 3rd time ive had to deal with the vavlebody/ tcm on this trans.

I did it myself the first few times by replacing the vavlebody with a rebuilt one. this last time i jus decided to take it to a transmission shop and have them do it right with a warranty too.
( also i didnt want to get bathed in trans fluid another time!)

Kimmer he said they replaced the tcm...so far so good with almost 1k miles on it. 12k/12mnth warranty. $2400.00

Nissan said the transmission was" failing internally" and needed to be completely replaced. I knew the actual mehcanical bits were still good.

No joke on that getting bathed in ATF, you drain the pan and there is so much more hiding in the valve body and the transmission itself. I had a big drain pan underneath and still had to supplement it with the transmission pan to catch all fluid coming down, it covers a large area. When I bought my Armada, the previous owner was selling it because the transmission would get stuck in 5th gear and lug like no tomorrow. He had a shop install a remanufeactured TCM about 6 months before it happened. When I took apart the remanufactured TCM, there was the most half assed solder job on the broken trace. It seems others that have purchased remanufactured TCMs fall victim to this half ass repair or no repair at all, they just scan the TCM and see if it works, and it will work on a bench just fine because there is no vibration or bumps to knock the connection loose. I found a very strong correlation between the CEL coming on, vehicle losing power, and having hit a large, unavoidable pothole in the road leading to the freeway here. The most frustrating part is, when you turn the car off and on again, the problem would go away until another big bump. Looking at how the trace breaks right at that 90 degree bend in the 2 TCMs I have fixed, it is easy to see how the problem "mends" itself until another big shock is introduced. It is not an especially difficult job, just tedious and messy. It is sad to think how many Xterras, Frontiers, Pathfinder and Armadas may have been scrapped for this one manufacturing defect, or how many people got fleeced on a whole transmission replacement. Glad you got yours fixed and with a warranty too.

no joke!

now that you mention it... the last time i got the CEL and p1757, it was after 2 days of dirt roads exploring. the second day i ran over a small tree stump going like 10 mph but it caused a pretty aggressive up/down shock to the front right side. it took out ( bent) my tie rod. the next morning after driving on a wash board road i got the code and limp mode( stuck in 3rd gear) fault.

I had my code reader with me so i knew what was going on. i cleared the code, and drove 150 miles east on i70 back to denver with OD off and no issues other than me worrying about it.

i replaced the valve body after that with a reman one, and that fixed the p1757 but returned a freaking p1756! uhh. luckily that valvebody was free becuase it was within the 3yr warrant on the previous on i installed.

after that i siad F this I gotta do something different. thats when i found the trans shop here locally in colorado and they got it going again.

I swear after this im going to look for a manual truck like an X or frontier.

I am a huge proponent for manual transmissions. The one failure we saw on trail was the clutch interlock switch breaking. Quick push start got my friend going again. They are reliable, and nobody asks to borrow your car as an added benefit. The roads in California are so chewed up, washboard often feels smoother. I noticed that one stupid, unavoidable pothole would trigger the code without fail. I hate this BS "engineering" philosophy now of minimum viable product, they put in just enough effort to get something to last through the warranty period + 15 days.

Have you run into the same error again after getting it done ? (i assume your done with it by this post)

Ran into the same issues just last week, considering buying the remans TCM but i been holding back after reading your writeup in this thread.

But i agree with you, manuals is where its at

so far so good.. remans are a gamble. but the first one i had last a few years before going bad... the reman cost me like $600.. but they are getting harder to find, Nissan doesn't make them anymore and many of the " good ones" are already rebuilt...

So my name is cody wettelings want you to get ahold of me if you even get this this post is over 4 years old I'm having this problem right now message me on Facebook book if you can
