I think I was one of the first people to peel back the cover on mine back in early 2006 and I made the mistake of not getting a good seal with the RTV. Make sure you go around both sides of each bolt hole and let it dry the appropriate amount of time before filling.

I used the Permatex Ultra Grey sealant I believe, as that closely matched the factory sealant. As it was a brand new truck and still under warranty, I prefered to not advertise the fact that the Diff cover had been removed, so wanted it to look the same as the factory sealant.

If you are concerned about warranty coverage on the rear diff - use whatever color you can see that has already oozed out the sides. Back on the 05 that was Grey, then you can at least easily say the cover has not been removed if you ever have warranty work done on the rear. I imagine if there is clear evidence of the cover being removed like the wrong color RTV all over it, then a Dealer is likely to refuse any warranty coverage.

If you are no longer concerned about warranty coverage on the read end, then just go with the Ultra Black RTV pretty much seems to be the way to go. I think the Black does cure faster than the Grey and yes - make extra sure to scrape off all the old crap and clean both surfaces real well with brake cleaner before applying.
