I've looked at these as well, they're shorter though and would need something underneath or on top to increase the height.

Have also considered the FrontRunner plastic boxes, but I was a bit disappointed when I handled one. Seemed pretty cheap and I wasn't impressed with the latches.

 

Good find. You can get the action packers at Fred Meyer for $27.99. At least for now. Even at $40 I'd rather just get something that fits EXACTLY and be done with it, just me though.

I love my action packers, but I wouldnt pay what their currently selling for.

It's good to see some reasonably priced options.

 

I assume its angled up because its sitting on the front seat rails?

Thanks for posting. I was going to get the action packers but am fundamentally apposed to paying $80.00 for two plastic boxes.

I'll add these two as well. They don't necessarily fit in that spot, but they are the best cost/value totes available IMO.

I just got one of those green plano boxes from home depot for like $17, really good value, I also have a smaller black one, very sturdy. I use then for carrying tools and gear in my X. and they fit nicely and are easy to store on the stock roof rack.

 

I grabbed two of the Plano ones myself. Great buy for the size/price. I was actually surprised to see them at Home Desparate.

 

You can add some weather stripping in the groove of the Plano lid to make them REALLY weather proof.

 

I have one of the 56 qt Plano boxes too, it's a really nice tote, I just wish it would fit in the space like the Action Packers (or that Craftsman one) do. It's just a little too big. We use ours for cold weather emergency clothing on day trips.

On the much larger totes, what kind of gear are you guys using them for? I feel like if a 20 gallon one were loaded up with a lot of stuff it'd be pretty heavy and awkward to move around.

 

I have one of the medium sized ones, and it gets very heavy with all my tools and spares in it. i actually keep everything in tool bags, the tool bags go in the plano case( one of the medium sized black ones) this way i can pretty easily take everything out( 3-4 bags) and move the case around. this is especially helpful when i put it on the roof rack.

 

I paid $25 for three of the action packers. How do you pay $40 for one?

 

From where and how long ago? They seem to be a discontinued item and are more expensive and harder to find.

This is a cheap and very functional way to go . These are grocery store stackable plastic containers. They are 11 inches tall X 18 wide X 13. The wood cap adds 1/2 inch. Easy to hall stuff and fits perfectly behind the driver and passenger seats. Great for using them as a table by the campfire - or double stacked for a taller table. Just another idea.

 

Where do I buy these?

 

I honestly don't know what the fuss is about Action Packers. I ordered these 9.5 gallon totes from Menards for $7 each, and they fit the space perfectly, as you can see, plus they have significantly more internal space.

 

I used these exact ones last fall when we started camping in the X. They worked great.

 

The larger action packers are absolute junk. Super flimsy. Not sure if they have always been that way. But sold by lowes for $4ish each.

 

I've used the above Rubbermaid bins for a decade and they fit absolutely perfectly. Throw in a 12 pack bottle beer case and the whole rear is a perfectly flat sleeping area. I'm 6'3" and have plenty of room to spare. For occasional overnight car camping, the only better car is the Pathfinder of the same era, because it's longer and doesn't require the containers (just flip the seats down). But that isn't as capable off road, of course.
