Aussie Locker for C200K -- maybe

Hey folks.

I've been corresponding with Aussie Locker regarding an option for the C200K for a while now, and they've finally got some concrete answers.
I'll get straight to brass tacks:

Aussie Locker can and will build a unit for the C200K diff that will price out at $299 if and when they can get paid pre-orders for 50 units. This is based on a production run of 200 units, with a projected delivery date of March (pending a timely accumulation of pre-orders).

I don't know if 50 pre-orders is possible, but I think it is a real option for you guys. Aussie Locker has a near impeccable reputation, and I think it's worth investigating.

I'm not a an XTerra owner, but I've been beating the bushes for C200K locker options for a buddy. I've been running an Aussie Locker in my 1993 Land Cruiser for ~4 years now, and I'd be happy to answer any questions.

I've been following that thread.
If you're referring to the unpleasant behavior of Remy's Powertrax test unit--I honestly don't know--but I doubt it. What was described in that thread sounded like a problem with the locker--they're not supposed to behave like that. The basic principle behind the Powertrax and the Aussie Locker has been around and in use for years. The Aussie Locker design is simpler than the Powertrax, but it's basically the same concept.

My first hand experience with the Aussie Locker is limited to my Cruiser--which is a HEAVY, but full-time 4WD truck (open-but-lockable center diff). This may make it a poor comparison to the RWD XTerra, I don't know. That said, my Cruiser is my daily driver--I drive it in all conditions--rain, snow, etc. The Aussie Locker is 100% transparent except for the occasional clicking noise.

I recommend you guys do some web seaches for folks running Aussie Lockers in RWD trucks.

bucksnort, I doubt it was the actual locker that failed; more likely a ring and pinion or axle due to improper setup.. Obviously I don't know for sure, but I'd be interested to hear the followup on what caused said wheeler on Kane Creek to break..

Anyways.. I know tons of guys who run Aussie lockers and are happy with them. mainly Toyota guys..

Agreed.
I really truly don't think the strength and durability will be a concern for you guys. On my 4x4 forum :iconbiggrin: the guys running Aussie Lockers (including me) are running them in 6,000 pound trucks with 35" tires. The locker itself is not the weak link.
I think the more real concern here is how civilized the locker is in terms of daily driving.

This is real offer guys.
I've been talking to Bill Cole from Aussie locker for a few months, and he's been working with his engineering team to get me an answer. He emailed me earlier this week:

Ryan,

Got feedback from Australia engineering. They can make a locker for the C200K open differential but it will require a special cross pin to be manufactured and included in the box.

Right now we are estimating a selling price of $ 299.99 (there are a number of variables that can change this but this is our best current estimate) for this model assuming a production run of 200 lockers at a time. Our goal would be to pre-sell at least 50 units before making a commitment for 200. Pre-sell means collecting funds.

If we give them the go ahead and fund the project we would probably see this model in our stock early March.

I think 50 is a lot of pre-orders too. But the offer is real and worth consideration. You guys want a locker--here it is.

Start a thread in the group buy section (or discuss it with a moderator), cross it against our forum and the frontier/equator forum. ONLY get a list of people that are willing to put the cash up front. You can add my name to the list as well! Keep in constant contact with your guy at ARB and keep the thread up-to-date.
