Lean Bank One (P0171)

so I've been battling a p0171 (lean bank one) code and I'm running out of ideas.

I've replaced, the MAF sensor, bank one's A/F sensor, redid the IMS's gasket (might have stripped a bolt hole while) replaced the PCV, checked all the intake hoses, and still have the code.

maybe the camshaft position sensor is going and causing a false lean code?

Anyone have any ideas ?

IMS has been on for 1.5-2 years i think, and I'm pretty sure i miss threaded the bolt for the manifold so i bet half of the threads on the plenum are toast. I did the starter fluid check trick no leaks.

Right primary cat is going bad.
don't tell me that, i don't want to hear it lol.

I may just go under and wack the cats a little with a mallet and see if i hear anything, keep driving and see if i get any new codes in a tank or two.

No code here. I'm sorry I can't offer advice - but for what it's worth, my bank one runs rich (er than bank 2) I can see it when looking at drive time data from my obd scanner.

If you can get live or logged data of your A/F alpha and or lambda values (can be seen with an OBDLink mx device and I'm sure others), you should be able to deduce if it's the cat or not

well i just found a leak on my Y pipe. Its right on the seam converging seam of the pass side pipe. Its a big enough hole to where i can find it with my finger and cover it with my hand and the leak sound will go away. also i was able to separate the secondary cats from the primary and look at the pass side, the mesh looks bran new in it

the leak is right on top where that little tab pice is sticking out, its prob a crack about an inch and a half long or so

OK so been busy but the saga continues,

broke down and took it to a dealer, said it was running lean (duh) and had low fuel pressure under load (replace fuel pump) they could not find any leak in the intake.

As of today:
new injectors
new plugs
new MAFs
new intake gaskets (the brown figure 8 ones)
new purge valve
new PCV valve
new pass side up and down stream O2 sensors
new cat back exhaust.
new fuel pump
new ECM relay

and I'm still getting F**KING lean codes

anyone have any ideas?

(and the solution of getting a new X has already occurred so at this point I'm about to give up and let it burn a valve and use it as trade (after a full mod swap over) for a kia or something)

I had that thought. Past that the only other thing I could think of is it has a bad valve but it would have other problems at that point. Or its possessed.

so reviving my own dead thread.... points achievement for that?

but always, been running with the lean bank one and two codes sense last year on the beast having given up. we swapped over the intakes from one to the other, now the '10 (80K) has the volant and IMS with new bolts and gasket.

not even 50 miles in we get a check light on the '10, and its lean bank one and two again, so something is up. I'm guessing its the IMS, I did an idea air relearn and also tightened the bolts a little more.

Any thoughts?

Like ripper said last year..check your cats. But for a different reason perhaps......

Check out my p1283 thread I've been battling (lean mix, bank 2)...and all I've done to try to fix it.
Verrrry similar to you. My last posts in it from weekend just may ha've been the fix. Flange broke it's weld off the pipe of the downstream cat. New cats on as of this weekend....no code as of yet *fingers crossed*

i may have left some info out, the '07 (175k) now has the stock intake and no codes. the '10 (80k) has the IMS and Volant now. I don't think the cats would be bad on it.

Yup...totally missed that! Didn't catch that "the beast" and the '10 are two different rigs.

Well....pull the IMS or volant, and see if CEL goes.out. if not, pull the other one.

Being CEL showed up after installing both of those, one of the two have gotta be the culprit.

It's cool man :) I will admit I don't English well.

The hard part with this is that I only have one intake per car. Next step will indeed be to pull the IMS. I wonder if it's out of flat, I bet even .010 out could cause a leak with the spacers thickness.

Another puzzler is the Volant and IMS combo was fine on the 07 for nearly 70k with zero problems.

Granted they worked for 70k in the other one, but if ya got codes after putting them into the '10, then one (or both) have gotta be the culprits.

Unless just some really bad coincidence in timing and the code is being tripped by something else ;-)

Not sure if this fits in, but my xterra was running fine with the OEM intake. I put in a volant for a year and a half, again fine. Put the OEM one back in and had some code, but I am not sure which. Did resets galore and nothing helped, so I put the volant back in and no codes. So yes, your xterra can just be picky now.

Battling also with reoccurring Lean Bank 1 code as well. Nothing I have done so far has helped. It seemed to resolve itself for a couple weeks, during which my Volant arrived and I glassing closed the Ram Air void and the Horn location void. Biting the bullet and dropping at a buddy's shop Thursday, will update as to the outcome.
