Ticking noise under hard acceleration

While accelerating I sometimes hear a ticking or clicking noise that seems to come from just behind the upper dash. I've also noticed my gas mileage has been dropping the last nine months, from tanks getting about 330 miles to 280.

I have a 2005 with the 6 speed. Anybody else experienced these symptoms? It seems like a problem with fuel management but it's not severe - although it is worsening slowly. If I let off the gas a little the ticking will go away but it will come right back if I stomp on the gas again.

I get that noise now and then but only when I'm in 4WD. I don't mean to insult, but are you by any chance in 4WD? That's the only time I get the ticking and worse mileage :p

It's either a CV Joint or U-Joint for the front driveshaft. Hopefully it's not the diff, but I'm not sure what a diff on it's way out sounds like, maybe someone else can chime in on that.

Not in 4wd, at least not according to the knob or visual display on the dash. If I was I think I'd notice it when turning on pavement. :)

I can buy the fuel/air control being off. The procedure to reset is to disengage the battery then run at 60MPH on flat highway in 6th gear for 30 minutes?

My experience with exhaust leaks in the past has always been a consistent ticking noise at most speeds, not just under hard acceleration. But it also makes sense that the most air is being forced through the system under hard acceleration/high RPM's, so maybe that's the only condition I can hear it at.

The sound is more of an electronic sounding tick, if that makes sense.

I get that same noise too, but only when I floor it hard on this one particularly short on-ramp. It's about the only time I get the RPMs up over 3,000. I hear a tick for a few seconds and then it goes away.

I just thought it was a quirk of the X, it's too new for me to really know what minor noise is a problem and what is normal. Hell, I thought there was something wrong with the clutch linkage when I first drove it thanks to the clicking starter safety.
