Me too. I hope I have time this weekend. The mrs. filled my weekend before I could even say Xterra.
That's why I'm escaping Thursday night. I'll be into Moab by Friday Morning and out in the desert shortly thereafter. No cell sevice even!!!

Alright so I tried looking stuff up on these when I first got the X but it sounded like it's not a big deal and not everyone did it. I know the last time I went out I was in way over the axle in both mud and water. Are you guys just not worried about it enough to do it right away, I mean - it's OK to go in deep a few times without a diff breather extension?

I'm guessing I should do this before I submerge the X again? I don't think I'll be trying stuff deep enough to worry about the T/C or tranny .. least not for a while..

i would do the rear diff immediately, its very easy and probably the most vulnerable. you only have to really worry if you get stuck while submerged. but yeah, i wouldn't press my luck either. there are no cheap repairs to look forward to by skipping this mod, yet the mod itself takes only like $5.00 and 10 minutes of your time.

Re: Rear diff breather extension

Pretty simple but thought I'd put it up anyway.

1. Remove right rear tail light assembly (2 bolts, then pry gently as there are two plastic clips)
2. Run rubber/vinyl tubing behind bumper along frame rail and over exhaust heat shield. Ziptie as necessary. Ensure you leave enough slack to accomodate the suspension travel.

3. Insert 1" aquarium airstone into end of tube http://www.petco.com/Shop/Product.a.../Product.aspx?R=3160&PC=productlist&Nav=215&N=24 4937&sku=257931&familyID=6367& (to keep dust out) available from any pet store.

4. Secure to tail light assembly using existing clips.
5. Remove breather from axel housing.
6. Pry cap from breather or purchase new nipple-type fitting. I didnt want to drive back to AutoZone so I just made the existing fitting work.
7. Fit tubing over breather, secure with small hose clamp.

Thats it, go drive through a big puddle somewhere.....of course theres always the issue of the front diff, tranny and t-case breathers but I didn't get a chance to look at all that yet.
What size hose did you use.

Good question....I'll have to look when I get home as I just used some hose I had lying around.

I think I am just going to pull out the breather and install a compression fitting.

well just finished this mod. Couldn't find the filter at the local pet store so I will have to hit up Petco or Petsmart this week.

I used a 5/16" ID hose with a thin wall. The hose is a little small and I had to warm it up to make it plyable enough to fit over the fittin'. I left enough slack to play with the length.

Going to try and order a compression fitting this week from one of my suppliers. Hardware store only carried english size fittings.

Koko, did you do the Tranny and T-Case as well?
Nope. The hoses are on top and from the service manual it appears that they are not open to the air. Not really sure. I went to petco to pick up the filter things, but wasn't impressed. Actually they are filter stones. Going to look for another solution.

Need to find out from a Nissan tech.

You happen to know off the top of your head what size comp. fitting will fit for the diff? I might try and pick one up on my way home from work in the morning.
I can tell you it is not a 1/4". Some thing a little smaller in metric or it could be an 1/8". I bought a bunch of fittings but not an 1/8". Would make sense it would be metric. Metric compression fittings are hard to come by in the US.

I am not too confident with the hose clap and would like a better solution.

what do these compression fittings look like? if you guys could provide a link to a grapic on the web or ??

i have a guy who might be able to get ahold of something for us. i just dont even begin to know what were looking for.

for now, i have the tube stuffed on the current fitting as others have done.

Like this.

This inserts into the tube and a nut goes over the tube and tube support.

I'm not exactly sure what type of fitting you are looking for, but you should try this company.

Thanks. I was just going to head to the plumbing supply house and see what they have. I have a bunch of fittings floating around the office I might give them a try.

I'm maybe not clear on what the fitting looks like, it's been too snowy and such to get up under my rig lately. What does the fitting you want look like? Are you looking for a breather that will screw into the housing, but have a male hose fitting on it instead?

Yes I am looking for a fitting into the axle whent he other fitting is removed. The poly hose then just clamps in nicely and you don't have to rely on the hose clamp.

lol... we have been posting back and forth too quickly. I've been responding before I see your replies. I understand what you are looking for now, one of those types would work quite nicely. I'll see if I can find a vendor that carries metric.
