Well what kind of surface are you driving on? If you're on pavement or something where the tires can grab, even gravel sometimes, then ya, that's going to happen, it's not a good thing but yes, it will happen on surfaces like that. The short explanation is that you're causing binding in your driveline, the force has to go somewhere, the easiest point for that to go is the tires, hence the skipping.

Take it out of 4 wheel drive when you are on surfaces that make it do that.
