well, i just got my windshield replaced for the second time, and i've only owned my x since feb. i asked the glass tech what the deal was with this winshield and he said that newer cars are coming out with thiner windshields to save on weight and thus gas milage. he said that the new fj owners are having a hell of a time with their windshields breaking a lot...so much that they are crying to toyota to get them free winshield replacements. i thought that was pretty interesting.

has anyone else been experiencing weak winshields? especially the people that go OR a lot. i'm hoping it was just a bout of bad luck..you'd think that nissan would put a heftier piece of glass on their trucks. especially when they are subject to flying rocks...

I've never heard that theory for windshields cracking. But over the last twenty odd years my windshields seem to have cracked with equal frequency, which seems to be all of the time.

Current windshield on my X lasted 3 days...The wife's BMW a month...All of my old jeeps (flatter windshield similar to FJ) cracked all the time!

It is true that manufactures design thinner glass to save weight, as weird as it sounds, it can take a good chunk of disposable weight down. Some "special" models even advertise that they have thinner glass...

i threw my cell phone in my dakota cause my g/f was pissing me off. the phone bounced off the dashboard and smacked the windshield leaving a nice spiderweb crack from A-pillar to A-pillar. the phone lived. i laughed.

Mine was cracked by hail back in March. Considering what the hail did to the sheetmetal I was more pissed at the thinner steel used. At least the windshields are faily cheap. I think I paid 225 to get mine replaced.

thanks for your replies. i should clarify that both times my windshield has cracked has been from stones picked up by the car in front of me and thrown my way..not spontaneously. that would suck if that was the case. i just bring it up because the other car i had before the x (a 2000 saturn) i had for 6 years and never a crack...and all of a sudden i get two within 5 months with the x. i found it all is all. i guess shait happens.

are there any that dont' break when hit with a rock on the highway?

sounds like just a run of bad luck to me. i had a huge chunk of something fly up and hit my windshield and A pillar on my altima about 2 days after i bought it (used). so far, 8 months, no problem on the x. knock wood. with plenty highway and OR use.

I have a crack almost all the way across, and another star right in my line of sight. both happened about a week after I had my X.

I wa sout of town, went to get my X from the airport parking lot. Noticed right a way that I had a 4 inch crack just off center on the frivers side. 2 months later it is now 1/2 way across the lower windshield.

My previous 2 jeeps each had the windshield replaced 3 times due to stones being tossed by cars or trucks. So far on the X I had a 1" stone hit the windshield, left a very minor chip but no crack - yet.

I'd get the chip fixed ASAP. When mine first chipped I was on the road for a cople of weeks. Went through some serious freeze thaw with no spreading. Though tI was OK. No dice the chip turned into a crack...

I would second that. Its pretty cheap to get the chips fixed and some insurance companies are even picking up the tab. They see it as cheaper to pay someone to patch the chip rather than pay on you getting a new windshield. Just call your insurance company and see what they say.

man.. then i must be lucky, a week after i got my x i got hit at 70mph by a piece of wood from a truck about 2 inches long by 1 wide. no damage at all.

I'd hate to jinx myself, but I must be lucky as well. I have 26,000 miles in a year and 3 months and not even a chip. I tailgate to say the least, Or as least thats what my girls says. When the spped limit is 60, Y am I doing 45-50. Get the f**k outta my way...... Also have takena ball or 2 and I think a even a bird. LOL Hope everyone else is having some better luck...
