My girlfriend and I are planning a trip to White Mountain National Forest in early August for some back country camping and hiking.

I've never been there, and my girlfriends only been there once or twice. We just picked up the National Geographic maps and GPS topo's and I'm trying to figure out what areas we should hit.

I thought I'd check on here and see if anyone wants to make any recommendations for the area. I like to stay away from the heaviest of the tourist areas if possible...

Cheers.

Oh man, white mountain nf is gorgeous, you're going to have a blast! My wife and I went there on our honeymoon, and again last year. We love it up there. If you're up for a difficult day hike, I recommend hiking Mt. Jefferson. Stunning views at the top! This is for relatively experienced climbers though as there are several sections of steep scrambling. Go prepared if you do this one. The day we did it, it was in the low 80's at the base and the mid 40's at the peak.

The white mountains are amazing. I was spoiled growing up near and around the Adirondack mountains, but I love the White Mountains. Drove up Mount Washington last summer too. We stayed in Bartlett NH. Lots of wild life. Saw a very large bear as well.
