I'm not sure if this question has ever been posed before, but when I got my 2011 Xterra X, I started looking at photos of other Xterras and noticed that there are 2 different styles of dashboard. One with recessed climate controls and ones with a smoothed over style. So which dash goes with which X? I have recessed climate controls but most of the photos I pulled up show a smoothed over dash for my year model. Maybe Google is betraying me but that's just just what it seems like to me. So help me out, what dash goes with what X? *

Some of the earlier 09+ X trims still use the 05-08 dash style (which has the recessed climate controls), presumably because Nissan either has a big back stock of them or is simply choosing to continue using the molds to save a few pennies/make the biggest return on the investment and upsell the higher trims, which have the "smoothed over" style.

Makes sense if you know how much a steel die mold costs. Your average G.I. Joe action figure is made in a $17,000 mold!

I wonder what all would need to be changed to update the dash? Obviously the climate control mounts behind the dash differently. Could be a fun project to figure out.

Guys, my 2013 Frontier S has the old 2005 to 2008 controls and the stereo surround. The dash kit for it is the old 2008 model when I went to change the stereo. I have the feeling that the lowest trim level on both the X and the Frontier still use the old controls that have 4 speeds instead of the variable speed on the higher models.

I have a 4 speed blower position knob as well. I can get a picture up later. I'm at work right now.

The X trim has an older style dash as it was probably cheaper for Nissan.

You are correct. My X trim has a lack of many features that I envy the lot of you for. Map Lights, Roof Rack Cross Bars, Hooks in the ceiling, fog lights... etc. Im slowly getting where i want to be though. Ive aquired a Wetbox, Crossrails, Map lights, and plenty more to come.

Trust me Nissan is the king of cheapness- the S trim doesnt even have an outside temp display or heated mirrors/seats despite being billed as an active lifestyle vehicle.

You constantly talk about Nissan's cheapness. While I can see some of the small things being annoying and likely won't have cost Nissan much, I have an X trim, and yes its a stripper - but its a heck of a value. Bought new in 2010, 4x4 Auto for $19k. Comeon no other SUV was comparable in that price range brand new.

To the OP -
You can add power side mirrors: http://www.thenewx.org/forum/showthread.php?t=62782

Map lights, a temp gauge, dimming rear view, and a compass:

Sun visors from higher models, cargo hooks:

Steeringwheel controls:

As far as a newer dash, that's a little bit more complicated. The center stack is all that's different, and the mount points are the same. I priced out the part numbers once and found it too expensive for just the look. But that's me. There's a member on here who did the climate controls (which is the hard part) but didnt change the trim (the easy part). Its not quite plug and play. Nuts did it: http://www.thenewx.org/forum/showthread.php?t=54311

Bottom line, for a few hundred bucks (basically everything besides the controls) you can have the small bells and whistles. I have done a bit to my base X to fix it up so feel free to ask. Its fun if you like working on it.

Couple other things:
Sound Deadening:

Door Pocket:

I'm sure there's others, but that's off the top of my head.

Under $20K the X trim is a deal for someone who wants a basic 4x4 I agree 100%. My gripe is that the S which typically sells in the $25-26 k range and the Pro 4x which costs more really demonstrate Nissan's ability to decontent vehicles. I dont expect leather, adjustable foot pedals heated glove box and that stuff. Heated mirrors are a safety feature and a temp display might add $20 to the cost max.

This is pretty much the best response I have seen. I'm planning to do all of these things to my base model. Thanks so much for the awesome links. I just got my hands on an oem map light, still trying to figure out how to wire that up so that it works properly. Also I've added Cross Bars, Wet Box, Mud Flaps, Pioneer stereo, and I plan on doing so much more. One neat thing I did is I went and got a few amber LED lights, some low wattage types and I tracked down the wire for the dimmer on the climate controls. Then I drilled a small 1/4 hole right above the center console change tray, and mounted one there, and two more, one in each foot well. They aren't bright at all, just bright enough to add a little sex appeal.
