In preparation for my 2nd road trip across the US for Christmas vacation, from TX to KY to NY to VA back to TX, I've been contemplating a radar detector. Just got my GPS unit (TomTom ONE XL) so I know HOW to get there now I'm worried how many speeding tix to get there! I know the Valentine One is pretty popular but I'm leaning towards the Escort Passport 8500 X50, seems to have better all-around reviews. What do you guys think? What are you all running who have them?

I've got a pair of Valentine 1's - one for each Nissan.

They're a big ugly detector but their performance can't be beat. The ability to tell where the theat is comeing from is a great feature. I react differently depending if the detected radar is in the front, rear, or sides. The ability to update them is nice. My first one was six or seven years old when I updated it to the current version.

Hehe radar detectors are funny. If you do get pulled over and the officer sees it you are really guaranteed a ticket at that point. :)

I do speed sometimes but I never get pulled over. I guess all the antennas and my radio plate helps?

not true.....i was pulled over, it was sitting right on my dash in plain sight of the cop....she then proceeded to hit on me and give me a verbal warning, lol.....i was pulled over for no front tag, so speeding wasn't an issue, and i was in my trans am.

I used to have one and only got pulled over once with it, pop it loose and slide it under the seat as the cop is making the U-turn or pulling out after you. Out of sight out of mind.

VA is a stickler for speeding, I wouldn't even try it if I were you. I've driven through it a few times, and I always see at least 5-7 pull overs everytime. Also their rules have gotten way stricter since I got here last year. I just set the cruise control on the X and drive right through that mess.

The increased fines are for VA residents only.

I did notice a lot when I had mine, the 5.0 would turn on their radar as you were driving up, especially at night. That makes your radar useless, well unless you like to panic and grab the seat with your ass when it goes off in full alert mode cause the police is right in front of you.

I have a Beltronics 940, its works better than I thought at its price point ($140ish). It has more than enough warning time and has a lovely "City LoX" feature to mute the stupid little X band while in town. I also have a remote mute/warning light mounted on top of the steering column of my truck so I don't have to reach out to mute/vol up/vol down the detector. Only complaint is the K-band alert isn't as loud as the rest. Planned on upgrading to a higher end unit but this thing serves it purpose very well.

And yeah, the cops around here don't like to hit their radar on at night until your on top of them. Then its to late anyway, hence why I don't ever speed at night. The city cops around here are unforgiving at best, bunch of a-holes who got picked last in high school who enjoy their new found power. The sheriff's deparment is alot more forgiving though, actually they'll pass you up when you going 80mph.
