What Parts, (and Tools), Do you Carry?

3695 Views 49 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  CalebX
After having broke the you know what out of my X on hells revenge, and seeing the SES light come on with a little more frequency after crossing 175k miles it got me thinking, what spare parts should I carry? Traditionally I have never carried any parts, fluids, or sensors with me, however knowing that one crankshaft sensor can down my rig in the forest isn't comforting. What parts, sensors, fluids or other vitals do you keep in your vehicle or consider necessary, I know the minds of the community can be a great resource so I am curious what we will come up with.

Thanks for the help ahead of time!

UPDATE: You all are massive help, keep the responses coming, I will update the list! After reading peoples responses and thinking through what could disable a vehicle I have thrown together a list and will try to keep it updated. this is not the golden ticket to get you out of every situation but it will help with most. I carry most of this kit (working on making it a full kit) when I do difficult or remote offroad trails, I am not saying you should carry these with you whenever you leave the house. And as always, knowledge is key, if you don't know how to use these tools then they will do you no good.

Recommended parts (Emergency replacement)
Crankshaft pos. sensor
Both Cam pos. sensors (Left and Right)
Spare ignition coil
Fuseable link between battery and vehicle
serpentine belt
fuses
U bolts
misc. nuts and bolts (including at least one lug nut)

Recommended parts (trail repairs)
Tire repair kit
JB weld
Zip ties
Duct tape
Hose clamps
Silicon hose repair tape/patch

Recommended fluids
Water (or coolant, either will work in a pinch)
oil
Automatic transmission fluid (can be used as power steering fluid, transfer case fluid, and transmission fluid)

Tools (Mechanical)
Socket set
ratchets
wrench set
dead blow hammer
sledge hammer
c clamp
screw drivers
bailing wire
needle nose pliers
linesmans pliers
vice grip
wire cutters
adjustable wrench
12v compressor

Tools (Electrical)
wire crimpers
butt connectors
jumper cables and jumper battery
Code reader (can't fix what you don't know)

I got a little bit too happy with the skinny pedal on an optional line and with my open diffs it allowed the front drivers wheel to gain too much speed in the air, when it came back down to earth all the momentum stopped and it snapped the rear u joint for the front driveshaft and the driveshaft itself. after my motor stalled I backed down the hill I was on and someone hopped under the truck to tell me the drive shaft wasn't hitting anything. I went to move the rig backwards onto hard ground and the flange on the driveshaft got caught in between the flange on the transfer case and the transmission. little bit of gas and POP went the corner of the trans leaking my fluid onto the trail. Came back home, replaced the transmission the following weekend with a buddy and was back out to try hells revenge again (with less damage) the following week. Ill see if I can dig up a few photos.
Thanks for the link! I had searced for something like "spare parts to carry" and didn't see anything come up, guess I should've tried a little harder.

Thanks! I guess I should've tried a little harder with my search before starting another thread.

Sometimes learning is expensive ain't it?! The real question is, did ya have some fun?

Wish I had run across these threads (or taken the time to ask the question) a long time ago. We've been chasing an intermittent failure to start gremlin for over a year. Finally took it to a 3rd dealership, 5th mechanic overall and they diagnosed the cam position sensor. I'm not even gonna tell y'all what I've spent chasing this particular gremlin, but let's just say it's a skosh more than the $33 that sensor would have cost had I asked the folks that actually know these machines!

  • Crankshaft pos sensor, both camshaft pos sensors. spare ignition coil (they all fit in a small box)
  • Jumper Cables
  • Code reader (can't fix what you don't know)
  • Fusible link that comes right off the pos terminal of the battery. I saw that fail on a frontier last year
  • Few small lengths of wire and crimp connector
I just bring the stuff that I know can take the truck down 100% and be replaced semi-easily on the trail. I feel like I can get by with a broken CV, u-joint, etc. so I don't bring those. Plus they are heavy and at some point you run out of space. I like everything to fit in that compartment underneath the trunk floor.

This is such a helpful list - I'd now need to stock up on these car parts.
oh no this thread is going to get me in trouble... I'm a sucker for carrying too many extras...

And if I'm going to start carrying a few extra u-bolts around I better start practicing replacing them while laying in the dirt...

learning was expensive this time but the trip was great! and I couldn't agree more, i think my SES light gets more use than my headlights.

Thanks this is a great list, I'll have to get some parts together and make sure I have the proper tools and know how to replace them.
Silicon hose repair tape / patch. It really does work - will hold together any rad / heater / transmission cooler hose long enough to get home - and i under 10 bucks.

I also carry fuses, relays (pulled from a wrecking yard) tire plug kit, bailing wire, and fast setting epoxy.

great! if I could go back and edit my original post (hint hint TNX) then I would add these to my list and make it public.

I don't think there are any restrictions on editing your own post? Click the 3 little dots in your original post and hit edit - doesn't work for you?

aha! I thought it would be next to save and share in the bottom left. thanks!
okay everyone, I have updated the original post to give people a good list, let me know if I missed anything or if you come up with some more ideas!
IPDM Fuel Pump Relay (aka Control Unit - IP) P/N 284B7-CW29E $4.50
I saw that on one of the lists linked in this thread. Was this only for first gens? I can't find anything related to a "fuel pump relay" for my second gen '15 PRO-4X. I did find a 15A fuse for the fuel pump. Did they switch to using a fuse instead of a relay?
