The following 'issue' may only apply to those with a separate street and mailing address (e.g., a PO Box address).

I just ordered two front Eastern catalytic converters from rockauto.com and paid through Paypal.

I carefully chose the delivery address in Rockauto.com to be the street address. Paypal wanted me to confirm that the delivery address was the mail address (PO Box number). I ignored that and then when Paypal webpage sent me back to the Rockauto.com webpage, I had to once again select our street address as the delivery address.

Rockauto.com's software automatically undid my delivery method choice and gave me the fastest, most expensive choice roughly $90 more expensive than what I had originally chosen. I did not see this until I confirmed the order.

I immediately tried to change the delivery method but that was not possible. Apparently it was too late to cancel the order even though I tried to do that within 2 minutes of placing the order.

I then quickly emailed [email protected], explained the problem and asked them to cancel the order so I could start over again. We'll see what happens.

Will be tempted to stop using Paypal over this. The extra layer of security that Paypal provides may no longer be necessary given all the other security now protecting this PC-workstation (firewall, ESET NOD32 security, IBM Security Trusteer Rapport, PIA VPN).

Update: Joe from Rockauto.com telephoned to confirm the cancellation request.

He recommended that I wait for a confirmation of the cancellation before placing a new order. He said the confirmation should arrive by email within 24 hours.

Joe just followed up with an email confirming what we just discussed and warning me that it might take a few hours or business days for the 'bank' (Paypal, Mastercard) to release the funds.

So far so good.

I have had the same issue an a few different sites using paypal as I typically ship to my work but all billing is home address. There have been a few times I didn't catch the automatic paypal/site shipping flip flop.

Due to fraud, a lot of places will only ship to the billing address - I have had this issue on other sites trying to ship stuff to my daughter directly at college not to home even with my cc - ship to doesn't match bill to. Usually however they just decline or hold the order - not change shipping. That's definitely a problem.

Update

RockAuto Customer Service sent an email yesterday evening about 6:45 PM PDT informing me that the order had been cancelled.

I just redid the same order but for ~US$100 less in courier fees. Feeling a tad cautious, this time I bypassed Paypal and paid directly with MasterCard.

Excellent customer service.

There's definitely a hiccup in that bounce back and forth between sites. That isn't right.
But yeah, part of paypal's "security" is locking in the billing as shipping address. When you don't allow that, various odd things can happen.

I had that issue this week too for floorboards for a truck... for my sons Little Tikes push truck lol
I've had a couple small companies that flat out said they will NOT shit to anything but the billing address.

The dumbass update.....

So, being a dumbass, I re-did the order for the primary Eastern Cats in the middle of the night, made a mistake -- one of the ordered cats was the downstream one -- and then cancelled it again.

Cancelled. Sent an apologetic email to RockAuto Customer Service that was answered in the wee hours of the morning. Cancellation confirmed early this morning.

Just re-ordered and this time got it right.

Just did my first RockAuto order for the driver side Walker CARB compliant cat. I wasn't a fan of the Auto Fill information with PayPal and ended up directly entering a credit card.

I typically like the convenience of paying with PayPal, but something just seemed off.

Update.

The AP Eastern cats were a big mistake, and I made the mistake of trying to get a regional Nissan dealership to install them, in order to avoid doing an 8 hour round trip to find a competent specialized exhaust/muffler shop. The dealership could not install them because the contemporary Eastern cats are not OE. The dealership did not have the equipment so they subcontracted to a local hole in the wall brake, muffler place. They did a shitty job and I had to pay another more competent brake and muffler outfit in Greater Vancouver to fix the mistakes.

One of the Eastern cats had to have a crack in the flange welded shut. Overall this cost me roughly C$800 more than it should have.

After about 15 months of use, the Bank 2 (driver side) primary Eastern cat has failed and needs to be replaced. Will likely go with Walker.

I will contact both rockauto.com and AP Eastern to let them know what happened. I am not planning on asking for a refund or a replacement Eastern cat.

Another bad PayPal experience.

In early January I mistakenly ordered a pair of Salomon X Ultra 3 hiking shoes from a fraudulent website. I should have noticed the extra "e" in the website as in salmonecanada.com. I guess I was desperate. The Ultra 4 hiking shoes have generally received awful reviews and I was having trouble finding any quality hiking shoes in my size and a wide fit. My first pair of bona fide Ultra 3 shoes wore out quickly but were otherwise very comfortable with good traction.

I contacted PayPal twice about this and they refused to fix it telling me to contact the seller. Naturally the seller's email bounced. I have now contacted the credit card company and they are looking in to it.

Regardless of how this plays out, I will be cancelling my PayPal account. I had always assumed, perhaps erroneously, that PayPal would protect me from fraud.

Currently I am hard pressed to see any value in using PayPal. Overall my experience dealing with credit card companies regarding fraud has been very good.

Avoid PayPal. Be happy and save time.

I wonder if the stock chart of PayPal (PYPL) hints at useful information. Perhaps I should have looked earlier. Here is the 3-year chart:

Rockauto is good and all, but I've pretty much stopped using them all together. Their shipping is just ridiculous and their prices seem to have shot up recently, maybe it's just the parts I'm looking for. Probably blaming the pandemic, like everyone else.

I was going to order front rotors and pads and it was going to run me $150, shipping was going to be another $35 and the parts wouldn't be delivered for 3 weeks. I went to Amazon and got Powerstop front rotors and pads for $85 (same exact parts on RA would've been close to $200), free NEXT DAY shipping.

All I use RA for anymore is looking up part numbers, then it's off to Amazon

Had a similar experience and went with Bosch rotors and brake pads on Amazon. Plus I have an Amazon credit card that earns 5% on purchases.

On the flip side, the OE Walker passenger side cat was double the price on Amazon and half the price on RockAuto, so it depends on the parts.

I had to laugh.

The shipping and handling fees into Canada are indeed steep though often the total price was still competitive, at least prior to the pandemic. Canada simply does not have a sufficiently large market to drive sufficient competition for specialized auto parts. I am glad that I am not an envious person because reading the prices you folks pay in the USA would drive me to jump off a tall building.

I also use RA to look up part numbers (along with the online Nissan parts vendors).

I may use RA in the future again but for an aftermarket item that will be installed by a professional, sourcing within Canada, strikes me as a safer approach even if I end up paying more.
