I personally think that you are more likely going to have vibration problems with AAL than without. The shims help and prevent any vibrations.

What causes the vibration is the rear pinion angle (where the rear driveshaft meets the rear diff. If the pinion is too horizontal then the u-joint binds and causes a vibration. If you tip the pinion up a bit the u-joint no longer binds and you have no more vibration.
