If you go to the powertrain thread there is a sticky there with a link to all of the codes. It will tell you which codes mean what. Based on the year of your X I would guess you are getting either bad cat driver's side code or a bad O2 sensor code. Since you are in NOVA I am guessing you are not passing because of emissions. If the X is stalling out then you are probably getting a cam position sensor passenger side code. If your gas gauge is not worki9ng properly then you are getting the bad fuel sending unit code.

Thanks for the info Skyfaller.

Yeah, I am failing emissions because the SES light is on. I have a code reader, the first code which came up was P0430 - driver's side cat. I installed some O2 sensor defoulers on the second O2 sensors hoping that would clear the SES until I could replace some exhaust components, but it came back on last night. I need to run the code reader again and see if I am getting a different code.

That, along with the radiator replacement and other work is my weekend!

If I am not mistaken the O2 sensor is after the primary cat so anything you did past the first cat is not going to solve your problem. The only solution that I know of is to replace the first cat (primary) the secondary cat doesn't usually throw that code. Replacing the cat on the driver's side isn't difficult. It is just a PITA and the bolts can be tough to reach and once you reach them they can be tough to get out. I do almost all of my own work on my truck. But when I got that cat code on my 06 I paid tohave it replaced. I bought the part and had it installed at a local muffler shop.

Thanks -

The first O2 sensor is before the primary cat, the second is after the primary cat but before the secondary. My understanding was that the computer compares the data from the second O2 sensor to that of the first to determine if the primary cat was working as intended. The idea is to move the second O2 sensor out of the exhaust stream to make it appear as though the primary cat is working. If I am getting the same SES code I will try moving the defoulers and see if that works.

I'm a gearhead with a pretty well equipped shop. I've built several high powered sports cars and do all of my own work. I just wanted to get the SES cleared to get the X legal to drive again (tags are expired). I am planning on swapping out the whole exhaust system from header to tail pipe when time allows.

I bypassed my trans cooler a few years back, but my radiator has started leaking like a sieve recently. Can't take a chance on losing it in DC traffic so I need to replace it this weekend. New rad came in yesterday.

Here's a question - when I put the new radiator in, should I keep the trans cooler bypass, or hook it back up?

Hey paul, sorry I didn't know the extent of your knowledge. Sounds like you got it covered. Big mistake telling us that you are a gearhead with a well equipped shop. We might start having Mod days at your shop. LOL. As far as the bypass goes, I believe you could do it either way and be fine since you are replacing the radiator. If it were me I would do the bypass on the new radiator just to be safe.

I would actually be happy to host some mod days. Shop isnt big but is well equipped. Every hand tool/power tool needed, mig welder, tig welder, metal cutting bandsaw, cherry picker, engine stands, you name it. Tube bender and press brake are on my short list of tools to add.

I have some bigger plans for the X but fist things first. I also have a 24 hours of lemons race car on stands in my garage i need to strip and get rid of sooner than later.

I’m looking for a mechanic in the NoVA area to do a lot of work on my 2006 Xterra SE 4x4.

The vehicle has about 120K miles on it and I need to replace the timing chains and Cats and do some routine maintenance on it.

Can you recommend anyone or do you know any DIYers looking for some extra money on the side?

Thanks.

Bringing this one back to life as I was following a great looking X most of the way to work today. Had what looked to be a Maxterra rear tire carrier on the back, real happy to see how it looked as mine should be here this week or next. Anyway, I am based out of Herndon in Northern Va. Love my 2010 X, and just made the wife get herself a '13 X.
