Upgrading 2007 Head Unit?

1148 Views 8 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Tlrtucker
My 07 has this head unit:

Vehicle Satellite radio Vehicle audio Technology Audio equipment

And I was looking to updgrade to a newer OE option. Would the wiring work or do the newer units have different amps/etc. that wouldn't match my car's harness?

I should be looking to upgrade to a new aftermarket head unit but I am just an OE honk and like the classic look. Maybe one day but I can find newer, OE head units for cheap and would add one temporarily (if possible).

Thanks all

That base unit does not have the wiring for the Rockford Fosgate I do not believe. I get that you like the stock look but I put in an Alpine unit last summer and having a crisp touchscreen that supports Andriod Auto (or Apple carplay) and access to streaming is great. This Apline was an expensive unit there are plenty of other cheaper alteratives but I wanted this really crisp screen. There are kits you can buy off crutchfield that will make the installation simplier but I paid a pro for mine.

The wiring changed on the newer OE radios and they used external modules for amplifiers, bluetooth, phone integration, etc. Plus the bezels changed. I wont say its impossible, but it is a low return on your effort.
I wanted bluetooth input on my 2006 non-RF so I researched and found a radio from an earlier pathfinder that looked identical on the front, but had some sort of external audio input on the back for a cassette player or something. I was able to easily modify that radio to keep the stock look with MP3 input.
That lasted quite a few years, and then I bought a modern kenwood with wireless carplay and wondered why I fussed with the OE unit. Oh yeah, WAF (Wife Acceptability Factor)

It was way easier to put a new touchscreen in. Now I have way more features than a 2015 Xterra had.

It looks fine, you simply change the colors to orange and it blends right in.

I have a 2005, now it has back up camera, full siri/google voice commands, google maps, spotify/youtube music. All for around 500$

Just go with a nice after market unit. They are pretty cheap. I use Crutchfield to window shop and find what I want then hit Amazon to save money.

Hey all just ordered a Sony CarPlay unit from Crutchfield. I don’t drive the X at all but when I do or am in it I can’t stand that stock radio it’s a turd. Will post some pix of the install!

T'EYES CC3 is one of the best upgrades I made to my X. It uses a much better processor than the Sony/Kenwood/Alpine. They come with kits so it looks like it came stock instead of a janky aftermarket fit. I ordered mine with a new TPMS system that displays pressure on screen, a backup cam, and an OBD-II plugin (basic readout). Seriously check it out. If you want pics, send me a message.

...they might not have one for a 2007. Sorry about that. I'm leaving the post for anyone with a 2009 or newer.

You'll be pleasantly surprised how much better your system will sound with a new head unit and stock speakers. On my previous Xterra I installed the cheapest double din touchscreen the local Best Buy had and it made my system sound 100x better that the same unit you pictured.

The install was very simple as well.
