I just unplugged my MAF sensor while it was running and it stayed on does that mean the MAF is bad or does it just need to be cleaned?

Most vehicles will go to a “safe” base map when the maf isn’t plugged in

With no MAF sensor it reverts back to open loop and modulates fuel directly based on the primary 02 sensors. Eventually it will throw a code but everything works as it should be.
