I have a simple metal kitchen trash container that I put a doubled contractor garbage bag in it. When travelling I just tie it closed, strap the trash container down to the cargo tray connected to the hitch, except when I'm pulling my harbor freight trailer behind me. I've seen too many trash bags along the highway.

Definitely not going to fall out, as we have the trash in bags and the lid of the trasharoo closed. We just got back from a camp trip with it and didn't have any leakage when the hatch was open. But, pretty sure we didn't have any cans or drinks or other stuff in there.
Just in case a picture is helpful, here is my trasharoo-hatch setup.

I ran the strap underneath the rear wiper blade, so I think it would easily get over the strap. But honestly, I don't think I have used my rear wiper since having it on there.
Yeah, sometimes I forget its there until its really dirty or dusty and im like OH! I have a rear wiper!
