Yea, best way is to have a dealer program you a blank key and install that! A hem! Here in Cleveland, a hem! LOL The crooks seek out auto's with remote starts, do fish in and they know just where to find the module that houses a good key, they take that out and now they have a car with a good key and no broken parts. Thanks for they key! So remember to use a BLANK or disabled key for your install! And omit the remote start decal.

The capital of crooks! Cleveland.
It was a few years ago, the Guy who owns largest Alarm shop in town went out of town from Cleveland Air port. He told me this himself. He came back to car, no car, he had like a 3 layered alarm system on it and a Remote start, amongst a lot of other goodies to display his business. Anyhow they look at the video and find a tow truck went to the paid parking area, said he was responding to a stuck alarm call, Put the subjects car on his roll back and drove out alarms sounding Club type wheel lock in place.
Weeks later it was recovered.... they stole it, took the spare key from remote and use that to joy ride. Even if someone saw them and suspected it was stolen, the fact they had the key kinda tossed em off that way of thinking.

He told me the story when I was visiting him one day and he was grinding a key off about half way, so I asked why.

He thinks a rival store did it to jack with him.

wow. that sucks. I know criminals are talented but I didn't realize how talented. kind of makes me glad to be in the south, but then again our city is growing a lot and we are starting to see some crap like that.

I had a blank key made today at a local Nissan dealer (not where I bought mine) and the guy in the parts dept said that if you attempt to use an unprogrammed key (w/o transponder) that it will deprogram your other keys. (?) Is this so?

Bowling Green Ky 260 car thefts per 100,000 (2004 data)

Cleveland OH 1214 car thefts per 100,000 (2004 data)

Cleveland is ten times the size of Bowling Green and has five times the percentage of car thefts with over 5800 cars taken.

My little city of 175,000 here in CA is a bit better than Cleveland at 687 thefts per 100,000.

Have a look around www.city-data.com for city-by-city data.

yeah. but gotta take in consideration that this is a town of 60,000 people, addind that most people have about 1.75 cars (I am guesstimating) then you get a about 90,000 cars in the city so that is 234 car thefs a year

Remote Start and Keyless Entry

...also, I don't have power locks... if that helps....
I work at Best Buy and put all this stuff in. You will need and extra key programmed by the dealership to go into a bypass module. Take the key to a grinder (if your worried about someone breaking into your truck and stealing the key out). We sell DEI products (Viper) and the basic model is the 160xvr (can find on www.directed.com) it will do remote start and keyless entry. You said you had no power locks...that really sucks because if you want keyless entry you have to get lock actuators put on inside the door which do what the power locks would do (can get spendy). On models with keyless entry for those who want to know I believe they have sleepy locks so that if you leave your X for a few hours and hit unlock they won't unlock on the first time. There is a way to overcome this but I forgot what the direct technition said to do...but I can figure it out by calling them again. Hope that answers all of your questions if you have any other about remote starts and how they work let me know.

why not just use your valet key??? i mean come on how many of us X owners have our X valet'd or anything of the such??.. that leaves you with 2 keys with the shiny nissan logo and not having to spend $$ for a new key.. and the valet key has the transponder also.... i took mine to Tweeter and they installed it in a bypass right behind the dash next to the ignition... cant see it unless you pull off the lower trim around the steering coulmn. I have the Viper 791X thenew one with the mile range to compete with the compustar alarm...

That is the key I used when installing my remote start.
