Timing Chain Victims?

How many people have had to replace or service the timing chain, tensioners, and guides? I'm pretty sure mine has recently gotten much worse and will be going to a shop this afternoon for a quote.

Figured I'd help the community out by keeping track of all the guys I know of that have had this "mod" done to their trucks.

I am at 160000 and my 06 needs it. Probably going to do it my self in the next couple of months.

I had mine done at about 85K on my '07. Had a tiny leak in the radiator so replaced that at the same time and the whole thing cost me just about $1,300 for reference. That seems to be on the lower end of what I've heard most people paying.

I had mine done at about 90,000 miles. Fortunately I bought the extended warranty when I bought the Xterra and that covered it. The total cost was right around $1400.
Did mine at 130,000 just as precautionary since the heads were off.

Bought my X with 124k, I know have 136k and the noise has remained consistent. I was so worried about SMOD when I bought my X I didn't even listen for the timing chain whine. Performance hasn't change but will probably tackle this over the fall.

06 with 143K
it was waaay past time to replace them.
guides was completely gone and chain was wearing into the 'piston' that presses the plastic guide against the chain.

Updated OP with a table for keeping track of all the victims.

Thanks for the help, Old Navy.

Dang, pretty close to nothing left. I'll be having mine repaired Monday by the local stealership as long as I don't find a cheaper quote.

My 2005 Xterra is at the mechanic right now for the timing chain replacement, along with a new water pump, PCV valve and what ever is in need to be replaced.

The sound from the timig chain was really loud, like a turbo engine.

Hope this repairs reflect in a silent an efficient truck.

What amazes me is that I have to order the gaskets from amazon, because in this country of mine, gaskets for the second generation Xterra are imposible to find! Except from the stealership.

yea, the oil drain plug magnet caught a lot of the metal, but where did the plastic bits go? would prefer to think they are in the oil pan rather than jammed in a port somewhere, or picked up by filter & removed via oil changes.

Hope the pic would help convince people to get it fixed soon rather than later.

BTW: you have my mileage listed wrong.
Total cost:
Labor, timing chains (all 3), chain guides, gaskets/seals, water pump, thermostat, coolant, oil filter & synth oil came to $1480.33

water pump & thermostat are OEM, all others aftermarket. could have saved about $100 by not using OEM but considering how much I was spending, worth the piece of mind.

repairs suck, but hey at 11 years old things are bound to go bad.
What's your mileage at approximately?
my wine started around 50K, got it fixed at like 85K. I dont remember the details on cost or when.

The truck has 82'000 km on it. Or so it says in the odometer.

I know develope th "car restoration" attitude, I know one day it will be working just fine.

Hope I have it back by monday. Really like this truck!
2006 S 4x4
Replaced timing chains, etc and water pump around 146,500 miles.
$1900 @ Nissan Dealership in Knoxville, TN
2006 Xterra, 145,000 Miles, $2000 repair for every chain and every guide.
120K miles on mine, quoted at $1,700.
The truck has been whining since I bought it with 101K on the clock. I know I'm pushing my luck on it and probably shredding away at the piston. Plans to replace it myself come August.
78K on mine; final cost was negotiated down to $923 (work done a local mechanic, not dealership)

Bought a used '07 XTerra with approx. 76K miles from a private seller in Boulder, CO. Had Boulder Nissan perform a pre-purchase inspection. They said it was in great shape--no mention of timing chain whine. Even said they'd buy the vehicle if I didn't. Bought the vehicle & noticed the whine, but assumed it was a normal sound for a Nissan engine since I'd driven another X and it sounded similar. Eventually did some searching and found the timing chain issue. Got the work done, but now am noticing an intermittent knocking coming from back of engine (lower) at idle. Anyone know if that could be related to the repair?
Had to put a new engine oil pump too! Impossible to find one with an independent shop....so I have to buy from the stealership! I'am picking it up today, I hope my truck will be running again in a couple of days.
Had mine done at 100K mileage wise and it was $1800. This included a new radiator to fix the other 'problem' Nissan said that wasn't a problem.

I called Nissan HQ and the flat out rejected the claim. There decision cost them a customer from this point forward. I have been driving Nissan's since I was 16. Time to find another auto company.
