Interesting. As I've said, I've only driven on the interstate a few times and when I have I'm into Portland traffic pretty quickly.

Even still, I feel like at those lower speeds where it's possible to drive in sixth, it's harder to react to fluctuations in speed. It's too close to the bottom of the RPM range. If you slow even a little, you don't have the power to speed back up without downshifting. It's easier to drive in fifth.

I guess if I had a wide open road, I could really cruise at 60 in sixth...but if I've got a wide open road, I won't be going 60!

I use 6th for cruising at 70. Sometimes stay in 6th down to 65 but will usually downshift under 70. If i need to pass i down shift to 5th then 4th and pass.

Depends on the road for me, but if it’s flat and I’m not encountering any load I’ll use 6th as low as 45mph. Definitely do have to downshift to do any meaningful acceleration at that point but it holds speed just fine. Do also definitely have to get down to 4th to pass on the interstate though

Since we're talking 6MT -- if I'm around 3k RPMs and I shift up like I normally would the engine revs back up to 3k with no appreciable acceleration and then drops down to 2k and starts pulling.. does that sound like the clutch going? About ~100k miles on my X with no clutch changes afaik.

I've never had anything like that happen, but I've also never had to replace a clutch. That happening because your clutch is slipping certainly sounds plausible to me.

Not sure I fully understand your wording but a slipping clutch is self explanatory. Say you’re traveling at 2500 in 5th. Come up to a hill and don’t change gears, and the rpms increase randomly but your speed stays the same or decreases. I believe this also triggers slip in our trucks? I haven’t had it happen in the X but have in other cars

Maybe the clutch is just slow to release?
If you mash the gas, does it wind up before accelerating?
If its in the same gear and you push the clutch in then release it... do the RPMS climb before settling back where they were before?
This should help you tell if its a clutch actuation issue or a clutch disc slip issue.

Here's a dumb question: does anyone with a 6MT ever get to use 6th gear? I've had my X a couples months and I forget I have six gears most of the time. It is almost indistinguishable from a 5-speed in practice.

Admittedly, my commute means I rarely hit the freeway. I recently did, though, and discovered I basically have to be going 80+ to cruise in 6th. Is that just me?

My commute to work is getting on the freeway, setting cruise at 75-80 and leaving it there for 45 min.

I used to have a 2000 Z28 M6. 55 mph in 6th was only 1200 rpm.
I had an Accord V6 M6, it was geared oddly low to me.
I currently have a Cruze ECO M6, it's geared high.

I just got the Xterra M6, my first impression was 6th was a little low.

If I stomp on the gas pedal the engine revs up high then drops a few hundred rpm.
If I keep consistent pressure on the gas pedal, push the clutch fully and then release it, the RPMs jump up when the clutch is pushed in and then they go back to where they were originally.

I basically have to release the clutch fully before it engages, especially in 1st/2nd. The interesting thing is that I drove a bunch in 4lo this weekend and it kinda felt fine.. but maybe I'm getting used to it.
