Anyone else have issues with their tachometer. It has been acting up for about a year or so on and off. Sometimes it works fine. Sometimes it works but the range is out of whack, meaning it will idle at 2500 or so and go up from their but at the correct rate. This is the weirdest one so far. Happened about a week ago. Now it seems to be working again. The day this happened, in the image, the needle was actually down by the low mark on the oil pressure gauge kind of bouncing around.

Am I correct to assume I need a new/different gauge cluster or can the tachometer itself be replaced?

Any thoughts?

It is in the gauge cluster. Not seperate. One computer runs the whole board and everything on it. The tach signal is pulled off the CAN network, so no signal wire to diagnose like in the old days.

I see that your check engine light is on have you checked the codes a bad crank position sensor will make the tach go crazy and give a code as well as cause issues with the vdc system.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't realize the crank sensor would do that. The truck runs fine but the 2 forward cats are gutted so it always trips the check engine light. Last time I scanned the truck, maybe 2 months ago, it was showing O2 sensors out of range. I'll have to scan again. Will scanning show a bad crank sensor?
