Ok so I used to store my 07 X at my buddy’s property with the shop and nearby trails, but I parked her 4 months ago in my driveway because it has had an overheating problem even though it was not leaking/losing any coolant and has now basically had a cooling system overhaul (radiator + caps, thermostat, water pump, coolant temp sensor, fan clutch, a few coolant flushes) and also passed the combustion chamber leak test on the radiator.. anyways I run out of ideas/money/motivation to figure it out and it sits for a while and I’m advised to compression test it instead of doing the block test to rule out head gasket entirely, so I go ahead and jump start the car as it’s been sitting a while and the battery was basically dead. It starts up and I let it run for about 15 minutes, and at this point it’s dark outside so I shut it off and save the compression check for tomorrow. Well the very next morning the car will crank but not start. Need it to be jumped again, only this time it absolutely will not start. I don’t hear my fuel pump priming when key is in run position though I immediately hear an electric condenser fan start spinning and stay on)
, I have a hard security light in run position also and no check engine light in any position. now obd-2 will not even connect. I read and somebody else’s forum this basically means immobilizer was triggered or there’s no communication with ECU…
Here’s what I’ve done so far: tried a battery from a friend’s infiniti, certainly cranked quicker but still same exact result all the way down to the little electric fan turning on
Looked up the immobilizer reset procedure and did it but my driver door’s keyhole can lock but not unlock so we had to use the one on the trunk hatch and I’m not sure if it’s the same
Tested for power thru ECU and it looks good
Checked fuses and relays, and Its worth noting that I’ve upgraded to the black IPDM
I’ve been suspecting ECU went out now but I’ve just learned the Xterra also has a Body Control Module so now im just not sure what I’m dealing with at all now. And the fact that it ran just fine the day before makes it even weirder. Just would hate to go get a new, flashed ECU in there and still have the problem.
I need advice from someone who knows a lot more than me, I’m 19 and have had 5 cars now done lots of repairs nothing tooo major but man this Xterra has given me some serious shit. I still gotta compression check it after this but damnit she’s so pretty I can’t stay mad at her

Curious- what was the outside temperature when this started happening? My X consistently has trouble starting if it sits overnight when temps are below about 45 degrees..

Worth noting I have a weird workaround that has gotten me through the past 4+ years with this issue - I keep a portable jumpstarter charged up and any time I have the problem I just hook it up to the battery and it seems to do the trick. Super weird since the battery on the truck is clearly not the problem, it has enough juice to crank for minutes straight even when temps are well below freezing.

Props to you for this level of troubleshooting at 19! Reminds me of myself 20+ years ago ;)

I'm reaching here -- but I had a key made for the X, along with a chip that needs to be programmed. Well the chip dislodged itself and it wasn't close enough to register so it would start. I had to re-glue it real close to the shank of the key. So..what kinda key do you have?

The cooling fan running is an operation of fail-safe mode, indicating a loss of signal between the ecm and the ipdm. Check all wiring between the two, disconnect and reconnect all connectors on each. Disconnect the batttery for a while, clean up terminals and reconnect. Check all the fuses at the Pos battery terminal. Look for mice damage, they like to eat wires.
ECMs are highly reliable, so don't just run out and quickly replace yours.
