Im dealing with the same issue a-lot of Xterra owners have, Squishy Brakes. So far I have changed all 4 rotors, and all 4 brake pads. Just got it back from the mechanic where he power bled my brakes and he said there was definitely some air in the lines that he got out. Its braking a little better, but nothing to right home about. He also checked all my suspension and said everything was in great condition. The next step that I saw on here and Reddit was to take it down a dirty road and engage ABS a few times and it worked for a-lot of folks. Well I did just that, took it down a dirt road and sped up to 40-50mph and slammed on the brakes, the only problem was, the ABS light NEVER turned on, flashed or anything. Is this a problem? Im so lost at this point...

I kind of felt them lock up, but I was expecting a light or something on the dash. It definitely made a horrible grinding noise. Sounds like you’re confused like me and don’t know when it actually kicks on

i can definitely tell when the abs kicks on. it is a pulsating sound but almost so fast itsa grind. sounds like its in the dash/ under the hood. some lights should come on, abs and slip.

Im also kinda trying to figure out how to make my brakes bite little better. i need to bleed them. pads and rotors are fine.

The xterra has a rather soft brake system from the factory, and it gets worse over time.

For what it's worth, I would try two things.
1. Have your brakes rebled in this order RR, LF, LR, RF
2. Make sure the mechanic has a scan tool which can actuate the abs and move any trapped air out of this system.

Hopefully this helps

Nissan has a tech bulletin out about bleeding the brakes on all Nissan models - every 10k miles. I have my system flushed and refilled with every oil change. My wife's Juke does the same thing. My 2014 X only has 30k miles so i shifted to 10k oil changes instead of 5k.

You can count me in your colum, just swapped to stainless lines and now I have the softness. No to worry they have a pill for that so I should be good. However the brakes are driving me nuts and I’m on the hunt for a tool that which will actuate the friggen abs pump. The Zurich Z15 will NOT. I would have bought the 1000$ tool if they had it in stock. Bled re bled slammy on brakes routine the whole nine. When I do the pads and rotors which will be when I do the tie rods I will probably go to nissan for the bleed.

Foxwell NT630 Plus will do the ABS bleed, I haven’t done it yet but I have that scanner tool. I would also like to mention that the tool will also reset you SAS (steering angle sensor)

One review of the Foxwell NT630 says it will not auto bleed ABS on an Xterra. I contacted Autel about their MaxiCheck Pro to see if that will auto bleed ABS. They said the 2011 Xterra does not even support ABS auto bleed through the OBD port. I will be interested to hear if anyone actually gets a scan tool to do the bleed on a Gen 2 X.

Does it have any ABS functions at all? I am looking for one that will read ABS codes, and possibly cycle the ABS valves which I understand is required if you replace the ABS module?

The Fox well NT630 plus will work from email I got from them. They confirmed with my VIN. I have not bought it yet but looking to get one. Replaced rotors, pads, master cylinder and still do not have tight brakes even after bleeding it twice.
