Does anybody know if there is a speed governor on the Xterra? I know that when I hit 110, it stops, although I can tell it still has plenty of juice left. Does anyone know if there is one, and if so, how to remove it? All replies appreciated...

yes there is, IT IS THERE FOR A REASON. the X is not ment to be driven 100+

its not a sports car...

btw.... you have to get the ECU re-mapped to bypass it...

The speed limiter is usually tied to the tire’s speed rating. In the case of the Xterra, it either has S or T rated tires. The limits on these speed ratings are 112 and 118. I would expect that Nissan limited top speed to the 110ish range.

The governor is set at 110 then it shuts off the power for a second. It's pretty violent and usually scares the crap out of people when it does. The only way that you can get it to go that fast is to get the ECU reprogrammed like was mentioned before. I don't know why you want to go faster then that usually you're making this a dragster.

Violent? Mine just kinda quits accelerating anymore. You might want to get that checked out!

They must have changed that from the first gens. I've heard a lot of people saying that when they hit the gov it scared the crap out of them because of the result.

The 2000 1st Gen didn't have the govenor. I guess they started installing them in 2001. So my old 4x2 1st Gen went faster than I should have been driving it once or twice.

If you really wanna drive faster than 110, then buy a car. Have you seen the kinda damage that happens when you get a blow out and roll a SUV at that speed? It's not pretty.

if you get it on a really steep hill (like really steep) and throw it in neutral, you could probably get it up to 111, MAYBE 112. but that would make you a retard anyway, unless you had the 1.21 jiggawatts to make it back to 1985.

On my 96 Yukon the governor hit at 100mph. It was the scariest thing I've ever experienced in a car. I don't know how to explain it other than it sounded like the engine dropped out of the chasis.

My Xterra has hit the rev limiter of 3000 in 6th gear many times. That is usually 110 or 111 mph. The Xterras limit is nothing like the Yukon's; there's just no more acceleration.

I had a chevy suburban that had a governor at 99mph (the speedometer only went to 100).

And when the governor shut the engine down, it was extremely violent!! I havent yet tried it with the X

Mine handles really well at 110 but the dealer told me that is the point that Nissan decided beyond that, they would be liable for turnovers. He said it was a stability cut out. Funny my Cadillac cut out at same point, but that was certainly a tire cut out because if you had Z rated you got 130+ from factory. So maybe all three reasons! 110 in an SUV is insane. I hit 110 on a private road, and although it wasn't a violent cut out, 1st time it does scare you a bit because it has so much more left to run out, you think you just blew the engine. It does die slowly and picks right back up smoothly as you get below the limiter. MC

Yea 110 is not a good Idea. I could not resist jacking with a Mustang. Weakness that could cost a drivers license. And that would also cost a Job in my case. But I have a pretty good stealth package. Anyone have Radar absorbing paint? MC
