Had to just post this recent upgrade from the stock 2011 Pro4X Rockford Fosgate unit, to a touch screen JVC head unit with Apple Car Play. She’s cleeaan.

No more messing with the aux jack. Bluetooth, plus put a USB jack where the cigarette lighter was. Shout out to Nate at Car Toys. Feels like a new car!

If anyone wants the old Rockford Fosgate, I’m giving it away along with a pair of new speakers that came with my new JVC for free. Local pickup Denver only. HMU

@Badlander it's a so called "double DIN" or "2 DIN" and is twice as tall as old style passenger car stereos.
The face does not come off it's a solid brick. It's about a 7" screen. I have not seen a removable face for double DIN.
Looks like this from back:

There still are single DIN big Screens like this where the screen could be even bigger and stick out more, and you could have 8" or 9" or 10" screen then.
Looks like this:

This second type might have a removable face but i haven't seen one yet, they are all built in.

Prices for first kind start at $150 for Atoto brand which has models from $150-$600 and maybe more.
The second kind is usually higher

Why have big displays:
GPS display
Backup cameras (some radios have 2 built in setups, usually at least 1) - they don't have to be backup either, could be rooftop or forward or suspension viewing or offroad low pointed
Some play videos from your phone by cable, etc
Some play videos from HDMI input (when you have a portable player of some kind with HDMI)

Sirius XM ($40 for 6 month subscription was latest deal, $50 for 6 months has been around or years) shows art work and has preset buttons, etc

CarPlay/ApplePlay lets you connect your phone Android/iPhone with cable or wirelessly (different issues with lag etc, still it's pretty)

I had big displays since my 2007 Xterra was new (aftermarket Alpine then Pioneer stereo). Many more choices now starting around $150.

I am looking at installing this same head in my 2012 PRO-4X It has the 6CD Rockford unit in it. I really love the way it sounds but I really want Navigation, Cameras etc. I have not tore it apart so I am not sure how the factory RF system works on these. Is the amp separate from the head unit? Or is it built into the radio? I know there are kits to install these that come with the faceplace, wiring harness etc so it is fairly easy install. But I am just dont know about the amp/speaker system. Does this Jensen head unit drive the speakers itself or does it have to have an amp? Or does the factory amp stay in the X when you remove the RF head unit?

So I tore mine apart trying to figure out a maddening alternator whine, and learned a lot in the process.
First of all the amp is seperate and under the passenger seat (I have an 05 but I think they were pretty consistent), but there's really no need to go digging there. The only issue you may run into is the fact that most aftermarket heads are 4 ohm and that amp and its speakers are 2 ohm. I recall reading that somewhere, at least. Mine came with a cheap but effective wal-mart head and the adapter plugs right into the existing harness, which then runs to the amp, which in turn powers the speakers and sub (under the driver seat).
Despite the ohm difference, since I installed a ground loop interruptor and did the meticulous job of tying all the wires into an RCA connection that simply plugs into the back of the head, the sucker sounds GREAT. Just gotta be careful with that volume knob, AM/FM can get away from you fast.

Whats the model number of your JVC head unit? Piecing together a system with crutcfield as we speak. Love the look, very clean.
Wait I found it. Here’s a pic of the manual. FYI, the Apple Car Play only works when your iPhone is plugged into a USB jack. And I think you have to custom wire one in and connect it. Car Toys put one in for me where the cigarette lighter was in the dash.

Perfect thanks. I like this looks and reviews on Crutchfield are pretty solid. They sell all the connectors to retain steering wheel controls, but I think you need to install a new blue tooth mic. This is likely going to mean better calls because the stock one is pooh.
