I only hear it intermittently over bumps in the road. Not speed bumps but where the seams are in pavement and smaller shallow pot holes and such.
It's not the spare.
It's not inside the truck.
It's not the shocks.
It's not the leafs.

Only thing I can think of is maybe a loose skid? Aside from that what else makes random thud/thunk noises?

Usually I'm pretty good finding noises in a vehicle but this has me stumped.

Maybe all those hookers and drifters in the back of your X are not all the way dead like you thought.

Those thunks and thuds can be frustrating.

I just 'finally' tracked down by latest one.

It was the clevis shackle I had fastened to my Shrock rear bumper. Took months to figure it out.

I know you specified that it's not inside the truck, but…

I had a similar issue, thought for sure it was coming from underneath. Took me weeks to figure out it was the toolbox I had in the rear storage compartment. Secured the toolbox, no more noise.

If you shake the truck back and forth or bounce up and down on the read bumper can you get get the truck to make the noise?

Last time I had an annoying clunk I need my brother bouncing on it with me to make the noise happen.

That doesn't do anything. It was the first thing I tried and all it did was make look retarded!

Definitely not the chain.

And I haven't checked bearings but it doesn't sound like that either.

Think hollow thud like hammering the side of your fist against a drywall wall.
