So I've got a friend with a 2005 Pathfinder, and he's sitting at a bit over 70k miles. We were chit-chatting the other day, and I was reminded of a time recently when I was riding with him and thought I might have felt his transmission slipping, so I asked him if he'd noticed anything similar recently. He hadn't, but I told him it might be worth looking into the rad-atf cooler bypass, as preventative maintenance. He gave me a blank stare, so I gave him the 30 second version as I know it and offered to forward him some threads from our site here, so that he could do some research.

In going through and compiling links, it occurred to me that the info is pretty well scattered amongst threads around the site ... and since it comes up often enough, it could be handy to have them all collected in one place. I don't know if it's been attempted by anyone else or not (I didn't find it when I was searching for other links), so I put this thread together as a starting point or something along those lines ... I know it's not an exhaustive list and I'll add to/edit it as warranted (or any of the Moderators can feel free to do so as well), but I hope I was able to capture most of the salient threads about the issue.

In the absence of a better system (blog/article/summary style format that's been discussed a time or two), maybe it's worth having this as a sticky? Also, FWIW, all I did here was compile links and organize their presentation ... full credit goes to the original authors and to the folks who have done the legwork in the threads themselves. Hopefully this will save some folks a bit of research time, should they go digging for any related info.

Could bad/wrong antifreeze be causing this?

Regarding the trans/radiator failures, I would like to know the type of antifreeze used and the change frequency used by those who experienced the failures.

Nissian is offering a reimbursement if you paid to have your radiator replaced;

http://www.nissanassist.com/web/Radiator/faqs.php?menu=22

"Q10.Is Nissan planning to provide reimbursements for previous related repairs?A. Yes, Nissan will review previous repairs for reimbursement, and determine if they should have been covered under the extended period. Please refer to the Reimbursement Request Form for full details. Nissan will consider reimbursement requests received through July 31, 2011."

Been trying for 2 weeks to get the form, the fricking link for the form doesnt even work !

I hate to say it, but I have never had a new 4x4 vehicle with as many problems as I have had with this one !

:(

Good call Tim ... I remember reading through that thread when it came up (after I put the original post together), but never did get around to adding it. I'll do that now.

Also added the Nissan Assist links, for folks who didn't (or haven't yet) gotten letters here in the states.

I'm gonna put this here because I'm not sure which thread to put it in......There are many! I noticed an 05 Pathfinder in the Auto Shop across the street from my office. We help each other out with work stuff and talk about cars at lunch, so I asked him what was up with that Pathfinder....he says "well, the owner says its getting a lot of weird vibration and the transmission is slipping. He changed out the fluid (just dropped the pan) which looked all frothy and it got better for a while but yesterday it happened again and he couldn't make it up one of the steeper streets so he brought it here."
We all know what caused this, and I reminded him about the day we talked about my trans cooler bypass. Too bad this guy didn't check around online, and even worse NISSAN WON'T EVEN WARN OWNERS THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN!!! SMOD CLAIMS ANOTHER VICTIM! DO THE BYPASS, PEOPLE!!!! (Or as Matsayz sayz, replace the radiator)

-Are there any options for those who HAVE to get a new trans?

-Can shops rebuild?

-Can you buy a new from somewhere other than the dealer?

-What is the official price of a replacement?

I'm basically looking for more options for those who have completely failed and are out of warranty.

Are you just stuck with $4-5k?

I assume a shop like Aamco or other trans shop *should* be able to rebuild, but whether they'd do a good job or not is probably best determined by doing a bit of research ... buying new is probably not going to happen any place other than the dealer; rebuilt or remaned might be another story as these trucks start to age and the aftermarket for OEM parts starts to pick up a bit. Again, a good trans shop should be able to to help out with potential options and sources. Another option could be to source a trans from a low-mile vehicle at a wrecking yard. Though, I'm not sure how much any of those would lower the overall cost.

I know AAMCO has a deal where you pay another 1,000 and get a lifetime warranty.

If mine croaks even after the new radiator goes in.... i will be going that route. Might be more pricey but at least it would be covered- unless the radiator were to leak again.. :-/
