ORIGINAL POST
A couple of us Va folks have been talking about a Peter's Mill Run/Tasker's Gap OHV trip this summer. We should also consider Flag Pole as it's very stock friendly as well. Anyways, I thought I'd start a thread for us to start hammering out details.

@bluez
@Red
@afarrar3
@Wanderlost
@PipeFighter

and I'm sure I'm missing someone, so tag away guys.

June 2nd seems to be out but I could probably do a day trip on the 1st. Beyond that it looks like July 14th would be my next REALLY free date.

I can do the first, but my availability is shot until about noon on the 1st. Have to be at Bolling AFB in northern Virginia for 3ish hours that morning. I’m always up for camping and a road trip. All I need is 2 trees somewhere nearby to hang a hammock !

As for the 14th. That one is kind of shot for me. Ill just be getting home from a dive trip to Florida.
When do you, @Wanderlost, get out of Bolling AFB? I could be at Little Fort Campground by 1 pm.
@TerryD, would 1 pm be too late for you? I think we all have a 2+ hour ride.

Also if I read both of your signatures correctly they would indicate that I am the only one that is NOT a HAM. Is that right?

Red
The latest I should be finishing up is noon. It's just my Reserves muster and, since I'm done in January, I'm pretty much useless to them. It's about a 2 hour ride from there, so I could technically be there by 2-ish.

Ham is the only way to go!
P.S.: How long does it take to get your call sign after you pass the test?

I tested on a Saturday morning and had my callsign the following Monday. Getting a vanity callsign aside from the one they give you is a different story - that took 18 days.
So just making sure we are always playing the same of music.

Meet at the Exxon at 2 pm and do Peters Mill Run..and camp and out the next morning?

I just took a test and got 35/35. But I am afraid it will be too late for the 2nd.

Cheers,
Red

Congrats! Depending on how connected the VEs for the test were, you may get a callsign as early as tomorrow. (Federal holidays always throw things off)

Can I leave my mudflaps on on this route?

Just take em off. Xs look better with them anyway.

Looks like the day is gonna be wet according to Weather Underground. If it's raining, we probably won't be camping.

Anyone besides @IssacHunter coming in from the south? We'll both be coming from down Roanoke way.

That depends what you consider south. Richmond area here. Wait. Nevermind, I’ll be coming from Bolling that day. Sorry. It’s like Monday.
Am I the only that is excited for the rain? That place should be soaked. I kind of hope it adds a couple section that challange the traction.

When I went around thanksgiving it was good weather and there were still some puddles. So I expect certain parts to be really nasty/wet/muddy.

As much rain as we’ve had, yea it should be pretty mucky. Hopefully not too bad. I don’t feel like swimming.

I'll be avoiding all the mud. I don't mind some muck on the trail but the deep water holes aren't for me. I've spent enough of my life replacing wheel bearings and u-joints because of that stuff...

A note: If you are bringing food, please have everything you can't get at a gas station with you. Also, no adult beverages on the trail! Back at camp is where we'll be taking care of that kinda stuff!

Im with you on the water holes. I did that in my Jeep years ago. I don’t mind mud, but I’m not a fan of bogs. Although, I did just relocate the rear diff breather. Hmmm...

I’ve never been to Little Fort CG before. How is For trees? I’m a hammock guy, so I avoid sleeping on the ground.
I'm hoping it's the perfect hammock spot because my daughter and I are BOTH going to be in hammocks as well. In fact, I just clicked order on a rain fly for her hammock...

If it doesn’t come in time, let me know. I have extras. The upside of making stuff - I have about 5 of everything in every shape and size.

I wish I had the time to make my own hammock gear. We do make our own whoopie slings but I order about everything else. Dutchware Gear is the vendor I usually use for my Amsteel.

I’ve been funding Dutch’s mortgage for years. I get most of my supplies from either him or Ripstop by the Roll. Amsteel though...I get that by the 600ft spool off Amazon. It’s the only way to get it cheap for the amounts I use.

Sorry, what I should have said was that there is no dispersed camping. You can't just pull over and set up camp. There are several camp sites though like those at Peaks of Otter and there are a few nice spots on top of Big Levels. A buddy and I camped in one of those last fall.
That's not entirely true. There's wilderness dispersed camping - backpacking - if you park at a trailhead and head down the trail a little while. I backpack the AT along Blue Ridge Parkway all the time; however, you are correct that you can't pull over and just set up camp. A Ranger will rain on your parade real quick.

Speaking of rain...anyone else watching the weather really closely? Wunderground is calling for upwards of 70% chance of rain and thunderstorms all day and night. Maybe I'll bring my kayak too for safety. >:)

You might bring a canoe so we can ALL get out! :grin:
If I had a canoe, absolutely. I do have extra swimmies you can borrow though. Bring duck tape - I think they have a small leak.

Hey @TerryD that post looks familiar :p

I will also be monitoring Ch 19 on the CB.

For the HAMs: there are a couple of 2m repeaters around, do you think one of them would work for us? I did pick up a 2m HT and just hope, hope, hope that my license goes through by Saturday.

Thanks,

Red

Repeaters work. Once were close enough, simplex works just as easily and doesn’t tie up the repeater.

I'll be on my mobile 2m until we get there. Just keeping the short and stubby on the Baofeng.

It looks like there's two repeaters that'll be quasi-decent.

  • New Market - KQ4Z 146.625 -0.6 PL 107.2
  • Front Royal - K4QJZ 145.210 -0.6 PL 141.3

There's one more but it's on the other side of the ridgeline, so we probably wouldn't get good reception. The New Market repeater is going to be the best reception. I'll be monitoring that and the Front Royal one once I get in range, coming from the north though.

One word of caution on the rear diff breather: the adapter I got is not an exact thread match for the cap that comes out. It's pretty derned close though. I forced mine in and it's been bugging me ever since. I'm going to be retapping the threads one it today to the correct thread. There is apparently an adapter that is the perfect fit though....and remember to use some thread tape.

Oh yea...also, I do not have a chainsaw. The best I can do is my backpacker folding saw. It's really fairly useless for anything bigger than a leg though.

But works great on legs though?!?

On limbs the size of legs? That doesn’t really help either. I imagine it would work great on legs. Honestly, it’s never occurred to me to try.

Some things to bring and read. Obviously if you’re starting out you can’t have it all but tools, some spares and recovery items are some big hits. If you don’t have much to bring it should be fine as it’s not like this is the Rubicon and you’d be in a group but it’s some nice lists and recommendations for building up over time as you do more.

Luck
Basically, everything...yer gonna die. Good lists, but remember, they're also for the extreme. There are some basic common sense items you should have though. Recovery and field repair are the biggies. I'm still building my gear as well. I think amongst all of us on this trail we should be alright though.
hmmmm on the facebook group they were saying it's not recommended for noobies to go so I think I'm gonna sit this one out and wait for the next one. =\
I don't blame you. I've been debating back and forth with all the rain we've been having lately. That area got a couple more inches last night with the nice front that blew through.

I'm probably going to show up at least and see how the beginning looks and judge from there. Worse comes to worse, I get a nice drive out into the mountains a bit.

Like I said, I'm at least going to show up. It's hard for me to make a decision without getting eyes-on. I'm also not too proud to turn around if it's over my head (literally or figuratively). It's a good time to practice proper judgment.
