That sounds like it could be the tensioners to me. It could also be an accessory bearing. Remove the serpentine belt and start the X if it’s still making the whine then it’s likely the timing chain guides.
Noise from Engine Bay - Need help Diagnosing Issue (video)
Hi,
Ever since I bought my Xterra (2007 S) a couple months ago, I’ve heard this noise from the engine bay. I took it to local mechanic right after I bought it for general maintenance and he didn’t mention anything about the noise (although I didn’t ask). He said everything looks good and the previous owner took good care of it. It does drive nice.
Can anyone identify this noise? I’m worried it’s a timing chain issue which I’ve read cost a ton to fix. Maybe the alternator...Or is this a normal sound?

Hey shoot me a tex I can’t view the video but I know for sure what the issue is I just had the same issue …: ) if ur mechanically inclined it’s about 4.5 hours a break and another 2/5 hours pending on ur expertise and about 300.00 worth of parts from the dealerThat sounds like it could be the tensioners to me. To be clear, there are a good many members here which I'm positive are decent people, a few I might question and a couple I wouldnt consider trusting. This is in addition to the general public which may stumble upon this site looking for information.
