I’m going to be installing a new radiator into my 2006 xterra to avoid the problems with smod. i have new hoses and transmission lines and coolant. i’m also wondering, is just putting in the new radiator enough to do? i’ve also seen stuff on installing an external transmission cooler. i’m just not understanding fully on what i need to do. i have everything necessary to replace the radiator, is there anything else i need to do beyond that?

No, there is nothing else to do.

if the oem style radiator, factory external cooler and fan are all connected and working correctly you should not need any additional cooling.

make sure you un-do the bypass once the new radiator is in.

The stock radiator does both trans and engine cooling. So if you do the bypass you need to add an external transmission cooler. The Off-Road and Pro 4x models have an extra external cooler already (please correct me if I'm wrong). So if you are putting a new OEM rad in it will take care of both but if the bypass was done make sure you undo it. Clear as mud?

what exactly is an “oem” radiator? i just went and got a radiator at autozone and put it in no problems. just making sure i’m not doing something wrong

OEM is original equipment manufacturer. Technically only applies to dealer parts but frequently used to refer to replacing with a stock or original part rather than an upgraded aftermarket part. What you bought will work fine and 99% likely that it is designed to replace the stock part but with the SMOD issue fixed.

Your radiator choice is fine
OEM refers to origional equipment manufacturer.

I'm sure it also means severely overpriced.

There are some items I wish to be oem, but not a radiator.

I replaced my original 2005 2WD S radiator at 110,000 due to the seal between the plastic top and aluminum coils blowing out. I had previously done the bypass. My vehicle had the secondary trans cooler. I used the OEM recommended upgrade 214609CA2E.

My original radiator looked primo so I was surprised the seal blew out.

My 2006 S model had a factory auxillary transmission oil cooler. I did the radiator bypass at around 100,000 miles; later gave it to my sister who is nearing 200,000 miles still running on the bypass with the factory radiator. No problems. But this is a 2wd, never towed anything, did trans oil drain & fill every 60k miles. I drive a 2014 4wd S model now.
