So the last of the parts I needed finally came in the mail so I'm getting started on my Black LED halo headlights! Tonight I just monkeyed with the LED's to make sure they'd work properly with the front turns, seeing as how the front turns are wired just a bit retardedly.
the LED's clustered in the pics on the board will make a white halo that will be mounted in the turn signal housing. they look pretty bright!
it's a LM317 chip which can be used as a voltage regulator or a current regulator, I have it set up to be a current regulator because it helps keep all the LED's equally bright and has to dissipate less heat.
(yes I know those are the *** rice rocket bulbs in there but I broke an amber one last night and that was all that was laying around. it was just temporary for today)
now I used a silpat, which is 10 bucks and usually available at a good grocery store or at williams sonoma or le gourmet chef or something like that. my wife bakes on it, I bake headlights on it
(a silpat is a silicone mat that can get to 500+ degrees without getting hot and is really convenient for this particular job or any other involving the oven)
leave the light in the oven (no peeking, you can turn the oven light on) for at least 7 minutes, I did it for 8 the first time and 7 the second time, it worked well both times, so I guess lucky 7 is a good number. then take it out (with garden gloves on!) and sit a towel across your lap (working as quickly as you safely can) and pull the light apart, make sure you undo the little clips (there are two on the top and one on the bottom I believe) as you're pulling it apart. also try not to get the glue on anything chrome, it's a sonofabitch if you do. this job is easier with someone to use a screwdriver or their finger or something to keep the glue (as it gets stringy as you're pulling the light apart) from getting on the chrome.
well I got everything painted last night, but I had to leave and was hurrying (always a bad idea) and I don't think I left enough time in between the clear coats and now there are "smokey" spots on the lights. sucks. I might be able to wetsand and polish them out though, we'll see.
I reuse the factory sealant by heating it up on both sides first with a heat gun, and pushing the light back together. after that I run a good bead of silicone around the seam to make sure no water can get in.
The LED assembly will be held in the light with this glue called Goop that's like a gel-ish super-ish glue...
I appreciate everyone's kind words. This is hands down my favorite mod so far (seeing as how I haven't figured out the wheels & tires situation yet) and it really changes the look of the truck. I don't think I'd do the LED mod for anyone else, but I could do a paint-the-headlights mod for people, and you could even get them to color match your X! (flat black would be way cheaper and easier though)
let me know if there's any interest.
I could do flat black for 80 or color matched for 120 (much more labor intensive)
