NOTE: There is a previous thread about this event. We WERE going to hold it at the summit of Darland Mountain, near Yakima. That location has been CANCELLED. I have changed the title of that thread and made updates. (And hopefully the admins will delete the previous thread.)

(For one thing, we found out that everyone would need a WA State Discover Pass even to camp at Darland, and we decided that was too much of a requirement. We have moved the event to Mt. Rainier instead.)

Final Location and Details Below:

Each summer it is my job to hook up a cargo trailer to my 2009 X and do setup for this event, which is held just north of Mt. Rainier in Washington state. It is a three-day campout with a stunning and up-close-and-personal view of Mt. Rainier, and held the second weekend of July. Some Xterras always show up, but any decent car or truck or modest RV can reach this site. It is a Group Campout with a certified permit from the local US Forest Service office.

This year it runs from Friday morning, July 8, 2022 until Sunday morning the 10th. Many amenities are provided and there is a free BBQ on Saturday afternoon. Anyone interested in attending must register first and get on our email update list, so that we can send you a monthly update (done BCC to avoid the evil spammers) and your printable PDF with the maps, directions, loose list of events, (it's pretty informal) suggested gear, and contact numbers in case you need assistance or something.

No one under 21 is allowed and that is because of Forest Service rules regarding group camps. Since alcohol is allowed (and anything else that is legal in WA state) this also means no one under 21 can attend. Adults only all the way.

This event is sponsored by SUFON (Seattle UFO Network) and small press Adventure Books of Seattle. No one is selling anything, and there is no charge to attend, and no charge on the BBQ. It's just a party we do each year.

Our permit only allows us a maximum of 75 people and about 20 of those slots have been filled. Here is a picture of the site below. It is about 14 miles south of WA State Highway 410, on a Forest Service road out of the village of Greenwater. You can Google Map this location by searching on Lonesome Lake, the body of water in the lower left of the picture. The campsite area is shown. And although we do provide a flush toilet and hot water shower in a small shower tent, there are also toilets at the parking area near the lake below.

What we provide and what actually happens at these events is too complicated to explain in a single post. But you can go to THIS PAGE at Adventure Books of Seattle and everything you need to know is there. Use the Contact Form if you would like to get on the attendee list. You are allowed to bring anyone you wish with you, and there is no real limit on how many people, as long as they are over 21. NO MINORS ARE ALLOWED or it violates our permit. Above everything else, it is a PARTY with very nice folks. But there is much more to it than just that. People hang out, do day hikes, mountain biking, use their telescopes and cameras, discuss stuff related to Bigfoot, UFOs, alien abductions, and there are even a sprinkling of 'DB Cooper' (the hijacker) fans. To get around the campfire restrictions, we use a propane powered campfire bowl that does the trick. There are also movies, presentations, readings, and a PA system and media projector. Cell service up there has been confirmed to four bars with 4G service. It's a lot of fun. Just click on the link above in this paragraph to find out more. It's all free anyway, except you should bring at least three days worth of water, other drinks, and supplies to last you that long. Some folks bring small trailers, but don't try to take your thirty-foot motor home up there because you probably won't make it. The event is held north of the Mt. Rainier National Park in the Snoqualmie National Forest. Four-wheeling opportunities abound if you wish. :)

FULL DETAILS ON THIS EVENT ARE HERE:
These two below are your organizers for this event, Rob Blevins and Susan Rapp from Yakima, WA.

Any UFO footage you wish to share?
We have a 60-minute production going for the party. Mostly historical stuff we grabbed from YouTube and other sources. Nothing too recent, mainly because so many folks fake stuff for the internet these days. So we avoided that junk. We are assembling all this footage into one video. The whole thing is pretty informal. People mill around, talk about stuff, eat, crack beers, the usual routine. Some take off on day hikes or go 4 wheeling up the Forest Service roads. At night it gets worse. (*laughs). Long story. Here's a picture from the 2017 Great American Eclipse campout we hosted down near Magone Lake, Oregon. Pre-pandemic. Better days for sure.

Picture below from the spot we chose last year. Scouting trip two months prior. It was okay spot, but we have a better one this year with a closer view of Rainier. Last year I used the 97 hardbody to haul everything. This year it's the X.

The only complaint last year was about the campfire restrictions, which are a regular thing now. So we picked up one of these from Amazon. Legal even with full fire restrictions. What the heck. No wood hauling and no smoke. I ask people to bring any extra propane canisters they might have laying around to help.

Looking Forward to attending Robert. Wife and I for Saturday overnight camp. Thanks for reposting. Darland would have been awesome but completely understandable given circumstances.

Are you signed up at the SUFON page at Adventure Books of Seattle? Did you get a verification message that we added you to the email update list? I can hold a spot for you for that Saturday (party actually starts on Friday morning) if you are on the list. Have to be on the list. Contact form to get on the list is here: (Ignore the question about aliens. That's a joke.)

Update: The wife and I have decided to stay in our Yakima home for at least another year. Edited this post because I thought we were moving to Coos Bay. But we decided to put a hold on everything until we see how this economy works out. Plus there is the event to consider. More than fifty people have now signed up to go. It's serious now.

Sounds pretty cool! We might head up that way for a day trip on Saturday.
Can't just 'drop in'. All attendees must reserve a spot, even Xterra folks. There are a few reasons for this. One of them is that we are not the only sponsors. The other guys are SUFON, the Seattle UFO Network. Anyone not on the list will be turned away. This is a three day event.
You can use the Contact Form at this page to reserve one. Down toward the bottom of the page. I wouldn't plan on a day trip for this one. It's 15 miles off the main highway out of Greenwater, WA. Mostly going up. Hardly worth it. Just saying. We stop handing out spots when we reach 75 attendees. (Forest Service group camp rules) There are about 30 spots remaining as of today. All the real action happens after dark anyway....trust me on this...and you would show up and realize you should have packed the tent and the gear as well.

UPDATE: This event is still a full-on go, but the wife and I decided to invest in a travel trailer for this one. We decided (at our age...older than dirt) that we have had enough of the tent camping thing. So I picked up a 17-foot Jayco Lite and restored all the systems, although it was already in nice shape when we bought it. I have already taken it offroad for a shakedown cruise and the X will haul it up Forest Service roads no problem.

Damn, you gotta love that high-torque, low-end power in those 4.0 liter six-bangers. You really do. :) "Laughs at danger, sneers at doom."
