So myself and a few others (RoxSea, @Biba88) are in the works of planning a trip to McAfee knob sometime this summer...weekend TBD.

We're kicking around the idea of hiking McAfee Knob early in the day and then making a trek to Flagpole Knob up near Harrisonburg to camp for the evening, and possibly wheel if daylight permits.

Based on how things play out, though, we may bag the Flagpole idea and try to find a place to camp closer to McAfee. If the latter is the move we make, can any of you recommend a place close to McAfee that we can camp?

We're open to primitive sites in the woods (such as those you'd find at Flagpole) or legitimate camp grounds.

Thank you in advanced! And once we figure out a weekend, we'll post up on here to see if anyone would like to join.

**Also:

If any of ya'll know some places to wheel closer to McAfee than Flagpole, we're open to that too. We're really going to see/hike McAfee, and then any wheeling would be a bonus.

We saw that CORE 4x4 made a blog about Potts Mountain Jeep Trail....one section they took appears impassible unless you've got a serious rock crawler. Any challenging but doable trails around McAfee???

I did this hike with my scout troop a couple of years back. It was a lot of fun. We backpacked to the top, then went about an hour past it to a primitive campsite. The next day we hiked the fireroad back to the parking lot. I'd be interested in going depending on the weekend.

If you figure out a weekend, let me know. I live close and would be happy to show you around after your hike. There are some roads in the area that make for a nice drive as well as camping at The Pines campground.
That hike looks like it'd be amazing!!

I'd definitely be interested if I can get the time off. Early June is packed with races, but I'm free as of now otherwise. Isn't GW/Monongahela full of derivable trails as well?
In GWNF there's Flagpole Knob. That will likely be planned on another trip though because some of the group i'm going with can't get off of work/school. I know there are other trails, we're all in the process of doing some homework to see if we can find some close to McAfee Knob...hence the post here lol

@Daking I'll keep that in mind that there's sites within an hour hiking distance. As for dates, we haven't gotten that far yet. I'll definitely keep everyone posted though.
