I first got the code shortly after I got my 2011 Xterra about 2 years ago so I bought a new aftermarket sensor. The SES light stayed off for awhile but its been returning frequently. I clean it and re-install it and the light stays off for about 2 weeks then comes back on. I have a mechanic friend that suggests I take it to the nissan dealer to have it reprogrammed.

My only concern with that is i've heard reprogramming something when it doesnt need it can cause other issues within the vehicle.

Not sure if I should go that route or just get a new MAF sensor.

$220 for a sensor hurts. Almost would rather spend $30 every two years. Especially with the chance of me buying an OEM sensor and still having to pay for reprogramming
Do you carry any spare aftermarket ones with you when out on the trails/off grid? Certain sensors, if/when failed, will leave you stranded. Each to their own, but I'd never put aftermarket sensors in. It's well documented on this site that many people report problems with aftermarket sensors. I'll pay the little bit more for OEM/Hitachi just for the comfort of knowing it is way less likely to fail and leave me stranded. And I've never heard of any OEM sensor needing to be reprogrammed.

I dont do much offroading. I agree i wouldnt prefer aftermarket sensors but If i spent $30 on one and it worked well for awhile i almost dont see the difference. Unless of course the OEM $220 one is known to last more than 5 years but from what ive read nissan has problems with their MAF sensors all the time. But ill probably look for an hitachi one this time around to be safe.
