I was recently cut off in traffic and my baby was totalled. I have looked around at other models / colors and it doesn't feel right. I actually don't know if I even want to bother. I'm open to criticizism or opinions or possible vehicles.

So sorry for your loss bud. Hope everyone involved is okay. From what I can tell, the X did what it was supposed to and gave its life for yours.

As far as a replacement, I don’t know what to tell you to be honest. The Xterra is a very unique compromise of off road prowess, cargo, towing ability and character with rock solid reliability at a great value. Prices on every vehicle, especially “outdoorsy” ones, have spiked due to manipulation during Covid and the Xterra has been no exception. Not too ridiculous like others, but for once used vehicles are appreciating. Hopefully you get a slightly bigger check from the insurance company because of this.

I can’t seem to build out anything new the way I’d like for anything less than $60,000 in Jeep a or close to $70,000 in a new full size pick up. I refuse to shop Toyota on the principle that 4Runner dudes have said mean things about my Xterra.

What are your real thoughts? What vehicles have your considered? Have you shopped X’s within a few hundred miles of your area?

I've been looking for a green one for a while, so when I saw the thread title I was excited at first, thinking you were offering one for sale. Then after seeing the picture, immediately saddened to see what happened to yours. Sorry, and I also hope no one was injured.

If I were in your shoes, I'd just get another Xterra. There's not much else out there like them. Lousy time to buy a used vehicle though, so make sure you get compensated based on the current market.

That was a nasty hit. I too hope all involved are ok.

The truck did indeed successfully do its final job of protecting you and whomever else was inside.
From what I’ve seen over the years Second Gen Xterras are stout when hit and take some pretty hellish impacts better than the average.

I’ll echo the sentiment (as will all of us, lol, as I think we are a bit leaned to loving the X here) that you should find another one.
Somewhere waiting for you is your next Xterra.

And @ccg1018 nailed it: “The Xterra is a very unique compromise of off road prowess, cargo, towing ability and character with rock solid reliability at a great value.”

No truer words have ever been written.

Nobody was seriously hurt. Thank god.
@ccg1018 I've really only looked at Jeep. I don't really have much love for anything else. I like the looks of the Wranglers, but the reliability and road noise is horrendous. I've considered looking for a new X, but everything I've found in my area need a lot of work. Not much for a selection in ND. I had to drive to TX to get this one. Also as you said, prices have started to appreciate so while I'll get a "decent" amount for mine, will still need to look far and wide to get my hands on one.

Sorry to get your hopes up @outback97

How very sad, glad your all right.

Unfortunately there isn't much out there like the X - maybe a 4th gen 4 runner - there current gen is a lot bigger - but there even harder to find. You most likely won't find that color.

If this happened to me I would be looking nationally for another X, or just buy a brand new Wrangler. However even the unlimited isn't as good a family vehicle, or as comfortable to ride, so it depends on your needs.

I also have a Fronty and I like it a lot, but its very different than the X in a lot of ways. I wouldn't consider it a replacement, although many would.

Since you asked for opinions - there is no color like the green color for the Xterra. I also cannot see owning any other color. I am actually ashamed that when I was first looking I thought I wanted a "Night Armor" colored one. Not sure what to do about it though... you could end up waiting a long time to find another one like it. I too can't really imagine owning another SUV right now. All of them out there are overdone & boring (Jeep, 4runner), too complicated/pricey (Land Rover Defender), or not allowed to be in the US (Nissan Patrol). I feel for ya, buddy

Although it's a shame you are in North Dakota. I totally need some clean rear doors ;)

Echo the comments sorry for the lost glad everyone is safe, we know we appreciate our trucks and what we do with them
Have thought about a 2012 or earlier Pathfinder maybe a V8 pathfinder larger more family oriented but still feel like will be driving the X and if you find a V8 you will already be half TS
Good luck on the search

Glad no one was hurt. You'll be surprised what aches and pains turn up in the following weeks though. Hope you got checked out. Trust me, I have learned that lesson the hard way.

I was in the same situation you're in right now back in 2016 - and it's how I got my 2010 OR. Before I got my 2010 I was driving a Solar Yellow 2001 Xterra XE and I loved that truck! I'd had it for 8 years and put over 100,000 miles on it! It was still in excellent shape too! Sadly a lady in a Hyundai ran a stop sign and hit my right front and completely wiped out the entire front clip, bent the frame and front right suspension. I knew immediately there wasn't a suitable replacement except to get another Xterra! I looked around for weeks and wasn't liking anything I was seeing. I found my current Xterra at a local Kia dealer and liked the truck, but didn't like the asking price. I negotiated for a week or two with them and finally brought it home for $100 more than my original offer.

You probably guessed, but my vote is for another Xterra! Or, you could go Frontier that's my other truck and I like it almost as much as my Xterra.

I had a similar crash a few years ago in my 07 and luckily came away completely uninjured.

I went on to a 1st gen Tacoma, which had been on my have-to-own-someday list. I liked it but frame rust screwed me. My brother has a JK, which is decent but just doesn't grab me for some reason, so that was out. Then I went with a Z/71 Suburban, which was great but just too big. I bought it thinking my daughter and I would do a bunch of camping but that never happened. Then I went with an F-150 which was great on road, but too big and not enough ground clearance (in stock form) for my needs. Now I'm back in an Xterra and I'm pretty happy with it. I go through cars regularly (I've owned 30 different vehicles in the last 20 years) and this is the first time I ever repeated, except for a few motorcycles.

Hard to argue with rock solid durability and being easy to work on.

Dang it! It’s a rock and a cliff where we are right now in terms of purshasing

People in parking lots have offered me $15,000 in the last few weeks and it was tempting, but then I realize what could I buy for $15,000 other than an over valued note from a bank at $700-$900 a month?

I say try and collect your thoughts and emotions until you figure out what you really want, need and can reasonably afford in a vehicle. I’ve made many rash vehicle purchases in the past and regretted all of them. Some needed many repairs, others were purchased with borrowed money I could no longer get myself out of - they cost me.

Sorry for the loss and glad everybody is OK.

North Dakota? That is almost as bad as living in Manitoba..... except maybe the mosquitoes are not big enough to lift you up and carry you away.

Personally, I would go back to shopping Texas or the coastal or arid interior bits of WA state, Oregon, or California. Rust hides and sleeps in places that escape even the most observant.

Seems like the US Federal Reserve might soon start 'tapering' (reducing bond purchases) and, yes, one of these days borrowing costs will come back up and restore sanity in several asset markets. When is still a big question mark. If you can afford the current bloated used market values, personally, I would not wait and would start looking now for that one X that will suit your requirements.

Hopefully. My wife and I are shopping for our first home and I feel like history likes to mess with the millennials. 0 debt, great stable income, 20% down in hand, 800+ credit scores and every home we've seen has gone for $20,000 to $60,000 above asking price. I'm not playing this game so I just stopped looking and am content paying rent in our tiny place for the time being.

I've also started looking for a new daily driver as the X is now 11 years old and I want to get something with more creature comforts for the day to day and guess what? People are paying over sticker for trucks right now too! There are literal bidding wars for the Ram Rebels dealers have in stock and it gets even crazier for the HD's that are on their way in a few months. I just don't get it.

It's all a little disheartening, but in the mean time I'll keep stacking away money and when things return to normal (or the bubbles burst) I'll be able to purchase a home and a new truck and / or have a nice emergency fund to sit on.

Anyways OP, I think we all really agree this is the worst possible time to be in your shoes, just try and be patient.

I recently purchased a 14’ pro4x because I couldn’t find the Toyota I wanted. The COVID+Toyota tax was insane. 7 year old 4runners and Tacoma’s were selling for close to their original MSRP.
The xterra was the only comparable vehicle with the lowest COVID inflation. They are still good value for money so I would get another one
