What liftgate/cargo door/tailgate/hatch pistons/shocks do you recommend for extreme cold weather such as -40F/C? I heard that I might need a different kind of gas that won't condense so much in the colder weather.

never heard of one with special low temp gas. I have heard of mechanical version - with just a spring - but I doubt you would find one with enough stroke.

You could just get some really heavy duty ones - with more lift rate - so when there super cold they still have enough to lift the hatch. How-to: Replace Rear Hatch Struts - PBR

I grew up where -40 was not that uncommon. I don't care to ever experience it again. Palm trees for me from here on out.

When I lived in Fairbanks, I just had stock ones. They did alright in the winter, but if I had to do it again, I'd put the McMaster Carr 175 lb struts on it.
