so on cool or cold mornings, my engine will start and rev up to ~1800 rpms then slowly drop.....but on the way down, the rpms will "see-saw" up and down....

you can see the needle as well as hear the engine do this.

why does this happen?

It's warm up of the engine. Once the fluids and the engine reach a certain temp, your rpm start to go down. It is just something that cars do to bring up the temp to "normal" operating temps.

all the other cars i've had....the rpms just gradually settle down in a smooth fashion.

maybe it's a nissan thing.
