I was thinking that my 4x2 is not worth modding since it will always be a 4x2. But seeing the damn commercials and reading about the good times that you guys are having its getting harder to resist.

It's not really worthless per say. I originally hated the X if you could believe it and the wife kept bugging me for one so I bought her a 2wd '03 Xterra with the 4 banger. We then got into to wheelin. The wife hated it as we would have to get strapped over things but on most of the trails I was able to keep up with everyone and needing to be strapped every once in a while. If you are going to want to trade in you're going to be upside down. I had to wait 2 years before I got my new one and was still upside down $7k. Of course the value of my rig went down dramitcally after the next gens came out. As long as they don't make any super big changes in the 07-08 time frame then you can mod your current rig out to your heart's content and then swap everything out when you get your 4wd model or you can save the money that you would do for the mods and use that to get a 4wd model earlier. You'll be able to do a good bit of stuff and that actually makes you pic your lines a lot better then if you orginally start out in a 4wd vehicel and makes you a better driver. Remember you can have the world's best 4wd ever created and still get stuck on or in something that even a person with 2wd can get through if you're a crappy driver.

I bet most of us on this site spend more time 4X2 than 4x4, so not worthless, just different.

Also I guarantee that the majority of X owners would be better served with only 4X2 because they never use the 4X4...

Just always make sure you have a buddy to help you out if you get stuck and to that end you have good recovery points front and rear along with straps etc...

I bought a 4x2 and don't feel like its worthless at all. It is a great platform for my kayak's and mountain bikes. It is also a great commuter for me cause it gets 24 mpg most tanks. I got the 6 speed for that reason. Worthless is not the word i'd use :)

A 4x2 is certainly not worthless at all. I have a buddy with a 4x2 that has full skids underneath and sliders. He drives over all kinds of stuff, but knows his limitations. He has a great time in his vehicle. Sure he can't climb over everything, but that's perfectly fine with him. It's what you make with what you have. So have fun with what you have and don't worry about what you don't. I have a 4x4 "S" and wish I had an OR with all the bells and whistles but when it came down to it, that was going to be a lot of hardware that would not get much use. The only reason I got a 4x4 was due to my job requiring me to get to the office no matter what the weather - otherwise a 4x2 would have suited me just fine.

And I agree with what has already been said, most of the time you won't be in 4WD, so don't worry about it.

Also in regards to the straps PLEASE get the ones that DO NOT have the hooks on them.

When I went to buy my X I had no plans on wheeling the thing. The salesman even tried to talk me out of the OR model. I have always lived by the "Be Prepared" motto. For the extra $2000 or so the OR gave me more of the things I thought an SUV should have even if they never get used.

Then I joined a local X club and well....the rest is history and glad that I bought the OR model.

Well, No, Man if i did not have a cabin, I'd have the OR 4X2 and a shrockworks bumper with a winch. If you lock that rear, You'll go anywhere a 4x4 will and what you have problem with the winch will bring you over. Plus, you save on Gas and weight. Keep what you have, Mod it up, use it until it's time to switch then decide what way you will go.

If they come out with a locker, you are in business! If not, get that winch anyways! You'll be capable! The right tires... Go for it!

Like Dan said, you'd be up side down right now. So live with what you have. I sure won't be dogging you for it! Like I said, If I did not have the Cabin, I'd have a 2X4 and a winch.

Another appraoch is to make your X the first bad ass pre-runner X!!! Get in touch with Total Chaos, SLR, or PRG and get the long travel suspension etc and head off to Baja or Dakkar

I second that!!!

That's my plan and what i've got in the works... though it will take time!
About being useless, no way... it gets you to and from work everyday doesn't it! As far as offroading goes you just have to realize the 2wd limits... yeah, it's not going to fair that well in Moab rock gardens but get better suspension and tires and you can't beat it in the dunes and desert.
With 2WD forget creepy crawler stuff think "fast"!!

Here's a couple pics of a proper built 2WD... it's an '01 that belongs to "socalpunx" from XOC. The lift is an SLR stage 5 with SAW's and bilstein bumpstops that gives 12-13" travel.

I think 4x4 may have been more needed (or used) prior to the VDC being available. In our 03, we'll use 4x4 for rain just to avoid tailing. I don't have a next gen yet, but I'm told the VDC should help reduce this. Regardless of the off road aspect of 4x4, how much is a little peice of mind worth?
