The hurricane now looks like it is going to stall just off the coast at the NC/SC border. Good news for central NC, bad news for Wilmington/Myrtle Beach area.

@Surf is your dad planning on evacuating with this new info?
Negative. Despite many talks with many family members, he remains a stubborn man. :dontknow: But at least hes done a lot to prepare to the best one can.

Looks like the latest report (for his location) is much less wind, but more rain

I've been called a Boy Scout more than once, never hurt my feelings. I've never understood why you wouldn't want to prepare like the ant when it's easier so you can spend more time being the grasshopper when things get harder.

I wonder when Americans went from being self sufficient to completely unprepared. A thousand mundane things could happen to stop your tap from having water, to knocking the power grid off line for a few days, to keeping fuel from getting to local gas stations. I don't think most people have a clue how complex and fragile all those systems are. Having a few days gas, water and food on hand is hardly preparing for the zombie apocalypse.

Then something happens and they whine that the government didn't save them. Very sad.

I took a Primitive Survival Course a few years back and they showed us how to tons of things (Fire, Shelter, Cordage, Water Purification, etc.). After we busted our butts off for three days our instructor was like "Now that you've seen how much effort it takes to live without it, maybe you'll respect the gear you should be carrying when you go into the wilderness."

I try and test those things from time to time but when I go camping I just baton some wood into kindling, throw some firestarter fluid on it, and call it a day. The girlfriend was like "Don't you know how to make fire from a bow drill?" And I'm like, "Yeah. It sucked. Now go get the Marshmallows."

It so funny how people don’t realize that being prepare and knowing how to is a whole lot different than utilizing those skills everyday for every day life. Just because one knows how to survive in the wilderness doesn’t mean you take a week sabbatical to the Amazon jungle or use a camp fire to cook when you have a perfectly good gas stove available.

Absolutely. I like to fool around from time to time making tinder balls and the birds nest when I have some time play around (I let Milkweed grow freely in my yard), but I'm not about to go anywhere thinking that is my primary means. When I went hiking (even small ones) I'd carry a fully redundant fire kit and survival gear, because you never know. Just because I've done it before doesn't mean I ever want to rely on it in a life or death situation.

The guys at that Primitive School go out in the woods with just their clothes and a knife and live out for a week at a time. Good for them, but I'm nowhere near that capable. Nor would I would ever plan something like that if a disaster were to happen. I watch the shows and read the books from time to time, but really for most people you're just asking for trouble if you think you can do what they do, even under ideal conditions. My Instructor said when we were learning the bow drill was something like "I've done it hundreds of times and there are days that no matter what you do it doesn't work."
