Below are the details for a locking handle on the roof bin. The install is simple and takes less than 15 minutes.

The correct locking handle is the Southco 92-41-511. This is the clockwise rotating, .63-.75 grip range handle.

I got mine from Austin Hardware. It cost me $27 + $11 shipping. I got in in about 3 weeks from the time of ordering (it was backordered). The installation instructions are below.

Grip Range: http://www.southco.com/resources/literature/2-1-1.en.pdf This PDF file shows what the grip range means. Witht he Xterra latch this is not important as you use the spacer and nut that comes on the factory handle.

Clockwise -vs- Counter Clockwise: This is the direction to latch. Since the X's handle counter clockwise to open and clockwise to close, you want a clockwise handle.

Install Instructions:

Tools Needed: 7mm & 17mm socket or wrench

1. Remove nut and lock washer from handle.
2. Remove handle from lid by removing the two small screws on each side.
3. Remove nut and spacer from old handle.
4. Place spacer and nut on new handle.
5. Attach the new handle to the lid with the two small screws you took out (or with the two that are supplied with the new handle). (I used the rubber gasket that came off the old handle instead of the cork one that came with the new handle.)
6. Attach the rods with the mounts you removed from the old handle.
7. Replace the lock washer and nut and tighten them.

What I got with the new handle:

The old handle:

What I used:

The difference in the two handles. The locking one is on th left (I was concerned that the new one was shorter, as you can see, it's identical):

That should about cover it.

I just got mine in the mail last night, and put it on today. It's a snap. Much easier to do with a step ladder. Musikman, thanks for the help on the right handle to order. I feel much better now with the recovery gear up there with a lock. :whax: (man, I get a kick outta some of these icons)

Yeah the latch I bought for my rear bumper setup came from them, though I bought it from so old guy who sells them to factories out in KC. I paid 50.00 for my latch to hold the tire carrier closed. I would've paid 40.00 ea. if I got 100 of them. :violent1:

I would, but I just bought mine and installed it. It took all of 5 minutes to install, and that included getting the ladder.

Not that I would, but you think your good pals at AC would put their money on the line and make that available. IF I was ordering from them I would tack that on for S&G's .
I HAD to have one, because I mounted my 4 KC's to the bin Lid and a locking handle will help KEEP them there.
I might add that when the criminals figure out these come off easy, they will start taking them and selling them on e bay to people why had them taken. Dealer price for one bin is over $350.00 as stolen.
I know someone in High places and I got mine on Friday at 13 30 Did I beat ya B Slater?
I didn't go the Ladder routine, I just took the bin down (4 Screws) and did it on the ground. 9Safety first! Slater lives on the edge! I feel much better now that I have it on.

..so instead of finding 10 people for the group buy, try finding about 250 people. or cough up the 5000 bucks yourself and go into business as a distributor.
