Sooo....to the OP: This, as already stated by everyone, is a terrific idea.

My question is: How'd you go about mounting the fire extinguisher in your original post?
Thanks.

I just used zipties to hold the mounting bracket to the open vent slits in the recess in the side.

Shameless plug to put this thread back on top for folks looking.

I just finished this weekend. Painted them to match (yea, I know. The paint will last all of 2 seconds, but it looked great when I put them in!). Great 10 minute upgrade.

Yea...decided to mount a bottle opener while i was at it.

These are awesome. Did this yesterday with some self-drilling screws. 2 in the same location as the factory ‘net holders’ 2 slightly lower I will post a photo later, should be a great height for a cooler or some of the Reliance water jugs in the rear.

Do you have pics of your setup?

Thanx

For anyone in the future reading through this thread, if you decide to also add the "lower" tie downs, meaning the ones placed beneath the others that replaced the original crappy plastic ones, just know that the sheet metal behind the plastic curves in sooner than the plastic would lead you to believe. So, when drilling your holes, try and do it closer to the hatch as opposed to closer to the front of the vehicle. I went too close to the front and ended up drilling into curved sheet metal which broke several drill bits before I was able to finally make a hole and screw into it.

Very nice and clean.
One queston: do the D-rings rattle or make noise when diving around without anythings tied to them?
One could probably use some small rubber bumpers (like the kind used for cabinet doors) and put them on the frame where the ring hangs down and rests. You can get them for pennies on eBay, or ask your local hardware store if they have some spares (I sell home improvement supplies, we have spares).

Finally busted the plastic clip on mine a couple months ago during a trip to Death Valley. Stumbled across this thread and thought it was a great idea. I checked my local hardware Ace store and Home Depot for the tie-downs and couldn't find anything even close. Ended up just ordering the same ones Surf used from a seller on eBay.

I like this idea but it should be done with bolts and some reinforcement. Can you access the area behind it by removing the tail light?

I don't believe so. You have the screws secured into the sheet metal. I grabbed each side and was able to shake the vehicle back and forth. More than secure for my needs and an upgrade to the factory plastic.

Jack nuts anchor in sheet metal or plastic.
They compress from the inside. They need about an inch of inside clearance.
That's better than sheet metal screws just holding it in by threads. I would still want to reinforce the area. I guess I will remove the tail light and see what's going on back there.
