Hey all,

I live in Maryland and there isn't much in the way of off roading or anything like that. I love camping but IMO pitching a tent on a perfectly flat fine gravel plot with an electrical outlet and bathrooms 10 ft away isn't exactly roughing it. My perfect camping spot would be one where I may have to wheel a few miles to get to it and once I am there, I'll be entirely alone.

I know there are tons of places like this out west where you "need four wheel drive to reach camp site", but here in Maryland we don't have anything. Not even legal trails.

I would love to explore more of PA and NY, but I don't have any knowledge of good places to go.

Thank you! You all are the best! :eek:ccasion5:

There are also many places in Virginia and WV that are fantastic if you care to drive some. Me and some friends go to a little place around Brandywine, WV in the George Washington National Forest.

Our Current camp ground is about 40min off the main road along mountain switchbacks in a small clearing between two ridges. Truck clearance only(cars will bottom out). Its nice and isolated with a creek close by and plenty of room. Sometimes get hunters passing through(bear hunters) as they train their dogs but otherwise its very quiet. Good thing is there is actually a WV state camp ground fairly close with prepared camp grounds, a lake for swimming and showers(week in the woods..your pants walk out before you do).

Well if you're ever looking for others to go camping and wheeling with I'm with a DC metro area 4x4 club that does stuff like this all the time!

I see you're in Bel Air, so the northeastern edge of the area our membership comes from, but we often go to places in PA and MD as well. We're doing an exploratory day trip this coming weekend to check out Bald Eagle State Forest for example.

Google "flagpole knob" in George Washington National Forest. There are some great primitve sites along Skidmore Fork Road on the way up to flagpole!

Thats out where we all go camping but on the WV side. The whole area is nice but the WV side is more remote and you loss cell phones once you cross the mountain. Too many people stay connected even while in the woods now so for me its another plus.

If I wanted to bring kayaks and yak in that lake at the beginning of Skidmore Fork Rd is that lake open to the public for such use? And secondly, if I wanted to camp at Flagpole Knob or somewhere along the road, would I have clearance with kayaks on my X?

Thx!

I see people out on boats, including kayaks, at the reservoir all the time. There is even a boat launch at 38.571555, -79.144324. Not sure if there are any seasonal restrictions or anything though so you may want to Google it a bit.

Regarding clearance for the trail with kayaks on your roof, you're probably OK, however the trail is in a heavily wooded area and trees are often falling across or over the tail so clearance and conditions change daily.

Meant to quote you before, but thanks for getting back to me. I'll check it out, thank you again!

I'm new to this site but got in for the same question. I have been going down near Fredericksburg VA to GWNF (Flagpole Knob area). Good primitively free camping.
Should be asking this question here; South Atlantic. This thread is for NJ, NY & PA.
