I have been a member for about six months, but this is my first post. I was looking around on the frontier website and came across a thread about cutting the silencer out of the factory airbox. I did the mod and was just wondering if anyone here has done the same thing. I was pretty impressed with the difference in sound. Any other gains I am not to sure about though.

ok, the only thing i can think of is the tube that comes into the airbox on the bottom side of the filter that contects to the finder, the tube once inside the box continues almost all the way to the other side.. so the air would have to go thru that before it gets sucked up thru the air filter...so cutting that tube off closer to the wall of the airbox would probably allow the air to move into the box more quickly?? who knows i'll play it more tomorrow....

I just had to sign up on the fronteir site to look at the images... and it does appear that he is talking about removing the tube that runs on the inside of the air box, I think I will try this mod today after work...

For any of you who check out the pix at clubfrontier, and decide to do this, I would suggest using a dremel tool. It took probably 3 minutes to complete with a dremel. It is very messy though, so take the box out first. I didn't and I still keep finding shavings after 2 months.

Thanks for the info, I don't have a dremel tool, but have been wanting to get one...

:clown: --Just a note guys--

--Nissan engineering put that tube inside the air intake box to provide a positive pressure situation except at high RPM--

--This all provides lower RPM variable valve timing info to the little jap guy under your seat--

--bear it in mind--

With that in mind wouldn't a CAI really screw things up. The biggest thing I was impressed with is the air filter not getting dirty in just one little spot anymore.

Tons of guys have done this on the frontier sight with a drop in filter instead of the CAI. They got the idea from the Titan sight and I am sure they got it from somewhere. When I mentioned it to one of my buddies he said that all his friends did it to thier mustangs years ago.

yeah i'm sure everyhting is there for a reason, but one must wonder the reasons... fuel economy? pollution? sound? who knows.. so i may hold off, but probably will cut it out:) more air is always better, and maybe there wont' be as much lag from giving it gas to actually feeling it go, haha...

The thing is called a silencer. I just passed my emissions test(I was a little worried though) and I have not noticed a mileage dropoff. The guys on the other site talk about all kinds of crazy gains they get from the mod, but I have not noticed much aside from the sound.
