I've had a couple of 4x4's, mostly large critters.
I had an '03 Escape recently, and hoped it would do some off road stuff but it wasn't a true 4x4 so it just didn't work out. As a side note, it didn't get all that great of gas mileage.

So in April of this year, I found an 2011 at a decent price. Yeah it was high mileage, but it was tight and mechanically sound. Traded the Escape and haven't looked back.
Tonka, my Xterra S, gets 20 mpg around town which is way better than what the Escape ever got.

I'm not a serious off-roader, I have a friend with a Pro-4 for that stuff, but I'm not afraid to tackle some of the backroads and have fun.
