So my best bet is to just remove the antenna when it's not in use? I'd rather not have it scraping low overhangs. Reason being, I live close to NYC and frequent parking garages and other low lying structures.
Drill it. NMO style mount and weatherproof cap for when not in use. Just remember never to transmit without the antenna installed.

Yeah, all CB radios only put out 4 watts (*cough*, legally :D ), so it really comes down to features.

Have had various units, from the little Uniden 510 to the 78 LTW (Trucker size with all the goodies) and several in-between. They've all worked just fine for communication, as the antenna and its placement is the key. Be sure to tune it to an SWR as close to 1.0 as you can and for all-around performance, try to get it in the middle of the largest flat area (roof), as possible. Beyond that, I like to have the weather bands on mine, but that's just more of a because for me. The only one I haven't had, which would be neat, is a sideband unit.

Ok, lots of info in this thread. What do you guys think about mag mounts? Eventually I'd like to hardwire, but I like the option of using comms in our other vehicle. My dualband ham handheld is decent from inside the vehicle. I understand that wouldn't be the case with a CB, so how effective would the magmount be? Something like so for example: https://www.amazon.com/Midland-18-2...8&qid=1491069729&sr=8-1&keywords=cb+mag+mount

El cheapo mag mount antennas will give you el cheapo performance.

However, there are quality mag mount CB antennas on the market:

Wilson "Little Wil", about $45

K30 Magnet Mount, about $40

Wilson 500, about $60

Hustler and Cobra also make mag mount CB antennas, but they are not as good as the antennas listed above.

There are also more expensive mag mount CB antenna, but those are unnecessary for your purposes.

Running a Cobra 75 WXST with the box hidden under the center console, and the cord coming out beside the seat.

For the antenna, I also used the grommet where the tail light wires come out. The antenna is mounted right above the tail light.

Sweet thread!

For some weird reason I woke up at 3:30 am (as one does every so often) and didn't have much else to do but read thenewx.org. I read this thread since it has been on my reading list for a while, and this afternoon I pulled the trigger on a Midland 75-833, Diamond K400, and a Firestick Firefly. With a little help from Google, I spent about $160 for the kit. Thanks guys!

I finally got my Midland all set up. I mounted the Firestik on the driver's side of the rear hatch and ran the cable under the rear window, above the driver's side passenger door and under the floor mat to the center console. Now, where to hang the handset?

A member 3D printed out some dashboard mounts that work for the Midland CB that you have. Should be able to find it with a quick search on the forum, or look in my garage thread for a picture and info.

This is where I hung my mic.
Brilliant! I think that might just be the spot.
