I have developed a grinding noise that is notice able when just coasting. Under power I get a howl. Mechanic seems to think it is the carrier bearings. He was unable to find anyone that carries the Carrier bearings.

First off does anyone know where I can get them.

Second should I have him do anything else while he is in there. The X is a 208 with 166,000+ miles.

Mech did recommend we might want to just swap out the whole rear end.

Thoughts?

I'd find a new wrench. Bearings are widely available

Find a shop that specializes in axle repair/building. If the shop want to replace the whole axle they probably don't have the right tools and/or knowledge to properly rebuild the axle with fresh bearings.

The guy is a good mechanic but I do think he wants to take the easy way out. Much easier to throw a new axle on the vehicle then rebuild one. I do plan on looking around for someone else.

Anyone know someone in the Delmarva area?
